favourite HK restaurant?
 

Can anyone help? For a special occasion we are looking for recommendations for a restaurant that serves local food and is fabulous ( but affordable!) When I say fabulous I mean the food, the surroundings don't have to be.

How about the Spring Deer in Mody Road, TST. Good Peking Duck and northern food.

It's very reasonably priced. You need to make a reservation though. It's a busy restaurant.

paula, you don't say specifically what kind of 'local' food you're looking for -- cantonese? shanghainese? beijing? szechuan? chiu chow?<BR><BR>one of my personal hong kong favorites is going to sai kung or lamma island for fresh seafood. alternately, yung kee in central is famous for its roast goose, and is relatively reasonable.<BR><BR>enjoy your trip!

Try Mei Lung Jung in the basement of the Century Hotel - Wanchai - for great Shanghainese food.

I don't know what shanghainese or chui chow is but, when I'm in a different country I always eat "local" food.(I drew the line at sheeps intestines in Greece however!!)I'm sure I will enjoying new tastes in HK!

The best Chinese food in HK is the local style, Cantonese - and do not confuse this with what we call "Cantonese" here in the US. In HK this means, for the most part, ultra fresh, lightly seasoned, and simply prepared seafood and vegetables. For a special evening in HK I agree with the previous poster and recommend a visit to Sai Kung or Lee Yue Mun for a seafood feast. In both places you purchase your seafood live from fish mongers, who carry it to the restaurant with you, where it is prepared to your taste. This may sound a little intimidating, but everybody speaks a little English and is very grateful for your patronage!<BR>

Just a rough guide, Paula, on various Chinese regional cuisines. Cantonese cuisine is what you usually get in UK Chinese restaurants, Shanghainese tends to be a bit sweet, Sichuan and Central China spicy(I mean hot chilly and pepper)and Northern Chinese a bit bland.
