Favorite Hotel in Beijing

My cousin and I are headed to Beijing in August. Need a good suggestion for a hotel for 3 nights. We are not looking for St.Regis type of luxury, but we are not looking for a cheap hostel either. Any suggestions for something in the middle? The Marco Polo has been recommended to me.....anything else?

My wife and I were very happy with the French run Novotel Peace Hotel (east wing), when we stayed there for 6 nights in Oct, 2002. Good location. At least back then it was reasonably priced.

The only complaint that we had, was the very hard mattress by American standard.

I haven't stayed at the Marco Polo in Beijing however their hotels in Hong Kong (HK, Prince and Gateway) are reasonably priced, great location with nice rooms/amenities/service.

My personal favorite in Beijing is the Peninsula Palace Hotel. Typical price for double room w/ breakfast is $165/nt which is a little pricey but well worth it.

We stayed at the other Novotel, Xin Qiao and we found it economical and very pleasant.

For us it was walking distance to Tian**m square. (Spelling is leaving me now) However, Taxi wise it is so cheap to go anywhere.

It was cheaper than the Novotel Peace and included breakfast.

We got a better rate booked through www.zuji.com.au (australian travel site) for Winter including breakfast than we could get on accor's own website.

We just returned from China a few days ago. We stayed at the Peninsul in Beijing and it was fabuous. The location was great and the service was great. We had the wonderful buffet breakfast too!

My brother and sister in-law stayed at the Marco Polo and enjoyed it. For the same price, I stayed at the Wangfujing Hotel ($100/night). It's in a shopping district with lots of Western and Chinese shops in the area. Subway is relatively close, which is very important to me. So easy to use with a map. A bit north of Tian'anmen. I've also stayed at the Home Inn ($50 or less), which is connected to the Rainbow Hotel. Half price of Wangfujing, pretty basic hotel, maybe like a Super 8. Southern Beijing, near the Temple of Heaven. Not too bad. Quiet neighborhood. Small, but colorful rooms. I think it was a queen (or full) bed, water cooler, tv, and services of connected Rainbow Hotel which is an older large hotel. Western breakfast buffet was available at both, after living in China for a few months, that was my little slice of heaven.

preskl,

Hope you had a good time in China. We were thinking of staying at the Peninsula and am trying to get a good rate.
How did you book your reservation? Is there anyone you would recommend?

Thanks
