In Melbourne, were I originate from, the name Guy Grossi has been synonymous with fine Italian food for as long as I can remember. When I heard that he has opened a new restaurant in Bangkok recently, I had put it on my list of places to try on my next visit, even though it runs against my normal trend of only feasting on indigenous delights.

Then I came across a recent review on another forum from the honorable and knowledable Emdee that I thought was worth sharing with my fellow foodie friends here.....

Maeng (from Pickled Liver soi 11) knows this chef. He has invited her (and he wants MY opinion as well) to come to the Intercontinental to try his pizza! He knows that I enjoy good Italian style pizza. I look forward to sampling his cooking! I hope to get there in Dec/Jan. DH would also like to try it. Right now, we like Via Vai (soi 8) and consider it to be the best pizza we've had in Bangkok.

Hi Carol,
They have many layers to their Melbourne establishment. The Restaurant there doesn't serve Pizza but the wine bar does and it is a very traditional Italian style where "less is more" and they are divine. I am not sure if you will find Pizza served in his Bangkok restaurant but I will await your verdict keenly.

He has invited "us" for pizza, so I am assuming it will be on the menu... or at least offered to Maeng and me!

Have you heard that David Thompson (Daley Street Thai, Sydney and Nahm London) is going to open a new Thai restaurant in the Metropolitan Bangkok mid next year. Should be worth a visit.

Seems silly an Aussie opening there but he is regarded worldwide as a master of Thai. Has a Thai partner and has studied a lot in Thailand. His book- Thai Food - is absolutely wonderful with brilliant historical info as well as recipes (he started out as an historian) and he now has another out Thai Street Food which is a little easier to use.

An Aussie showing the Thai's how to cook in Bangkok?..Throw another Pad Thai on the Barby!!!!

I've been looking for a really good Thai cook-book. I will check it out.

MaryW--he already did in a manner of speaking. His protege (and executive chefs from his restaurant in London) have opened Bo Lan, which has been the subject of much discussion here (both good and bad)--you should do a search.

Filmwill - how did I miss that thread - must have had my head in the sand! Thanks for pointing me to it. I'll be trying Bo Lan out next visit for sure. Hopefully the new Thompson one will be open by the time I get back too.

This new restaurant sounds like David will be responsible for it but he does spend his time split between London and Thailand so obviously isn't there all the time. - he says it will be more relaxed than Nahm - I imagine still focused on Royal cuisine though. If you liked his Thai Food I'm sure you'll also like the new Street food one.
