Family trip to S.E. Asia
Planning a trip to celebrate wife’s 50th with my 2 sons ages 12 & 14 last 3 weeks of July. Preliminary thoughts: Bangkok/Phuket - 1 week Penang/Langkawi - 1 week Ubud/Seminyak - 1 week I know it’s a lot to cover, but we probably won’t be able to afford to come back to this area again so wanted to cover spots I thought my wife and kids would enjoy. My wife loves ASIAN food especially Thai and good food is especially important to her on our travels. Would very much appreciate some feedback as to suggested itineraries and places to visit/stay Thanks a million! Vinay |
That's definitely a lot to fit into the time you have, but I think you could work, although you'll lose a chunk of time with each change of location.

I think you may be underestimating the time involved in getting from place to place by air. By the time you pack, get to the airport, go through security/immigration, wait for your flight then do the same on the other end you'll have used up the better part of a day. You also may want to check the weather in Phuket in July.
In Bali I'd suggest the Petitenget area (the northern part of Seminyak). There are many choices of accommodation, both luxury resorts right on the beach and moderate/budget choices inland but still within walking distance. You might also look at private villas with pools and full staff. Airbnb is very popular in Bali, but quality and reliability is variable so be sure to check references. Be aware that the west coast of Bali is a big wave surfer beach so pay attention to tides and swells when swimming. At some times the ocean is calm and tame, at others it's quite fierce. In Ubud you can either stay in the town of Ubud itself or in the surrounding countryside. Personally, I'd suggest staying outside of town as you can always get transport to town for shopping, meals or dance performances. Activitiies outside of Ubud are fairly spread out and vary from arts & crafts, performing arts, adventure travel (rafting, climbing, biking, village & rice paddy walks), learning (cooking, arts, bird walks), wellness (yoga, massage). Central Bali is very scenic, but be careful to limit your car time, even if you see less. Same advice for the southern beaches: there are good restaurants, shops, beaches in all parts of south Bali, but especially during July traffic can back up. Pick your spot and stay there. There are plenty of good food opportunities, especially in Petittenget and Ubud -- local, Western and combinations. Popular restaurants will be busy in July, so book in advance.
