Dan & Sally: My wife and I are planning to visit Thailand for two weeks in October, and we're debating whether to take our girls, 10 and 12. I'm sure it would be a thrill for them and an educational experience, but I'm concerned about the length of time we'd be away from home/school/friends, and how draining it would be for them. I'd love to hear how you and your kids handled it. Thanks!

We have taken our children out of school for at least two weeks every year (they are about the same ages as your children)for trips to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Europe, Peru, and Mexico. They are strong student, and no one (not parents, teachers, or children) has every had any regrets. The teachers put together packages of "critical" homework and we require our children to keep a daily journal of their travels. Math is relatively easy, because we have our children do all of the foreign currency conversations
