Hi we are planning a family holiday to Veitnam in August this year. I was looking for suggestions as to where we may visit and stay. At the moment we have a blank canvas as to where we want to start and what we want to do. I am finding it difficult to find accomodation for all 5 of us. The kids are 4, 6 and 8 so having seperate rooms isn't really an option unless they were linked. Ideally we would like a suite or bungallow/villa. Some of these seem to be really pricey as they tend to be at the top resorts. Our budget is up to $200 night but i would prefer to pay about $100. I think we would like to be based near the beach.

Has anyone been recently with small kids any tips or accomodation you would recommend. Also any local knowledge woud be appreciated regarding hiring drivers / tours etc as i will be trying to organise myself not through a tour company.

Are you planning on traveling around or just staying at a beach? As I read your post, you want to stay in one place and take some day trips - is that correct?

How long do you plan to be in Vietnam and how much of the country do you want to see? For beaches, we had a great stay at the Hoi An Beach resort in Hoi An (actually a little ways out of town, but a great place to stay). Some of the riverfront villas have multiple beds so might work for your family. I think we paid about $110 for ours for two people. But that was in November and I don't know how the prices will differ in the summer. Might be a bit less.

If you are up north you should go to Halong Bay. It's an amazing place. We booked through Indochina Junk and they were very helpful and easy to work with.

Once we had an idea of what we wanted to see, Tonkin Tours was great at providing us with guides. I mostly booked our own hotels and transportation.

Thanks for your replies.

The plan is to spend 2 weeks in Vietnam. I was thinking maybe starting at Hanoi and then heading south to Hue then further south to HCMC. With some day trips on the way. But as we are travelling with 3 kids 8,6 and 4 maybe this is being a bit ambitious.

If we were to travel via minibus/taxi how much would it cost for a driver to take us to Hue from Hanoi and would you recommend a stop enroute? Also the same question for Hue tyo HCMC.

I think we may end up booking our travel around where we can get a good deal on accomodation. Ideally 2 bed bungalow or villa or ajoining rooms in hotel.

I shall have a look at all your recommendations and report back.

Craig, I do think your idea is a bit "ambitious." With three children under 10, you'll want to consider their needs. Spending days on end in a van in a foreign country is likely not high on their list (or, frankly, your list) of things you want to do on vacation. The distances are greater than you appear to anticipate.

With two weeks, I'd suggest you choose two locations you'd like to explore. It might be Hanoi and Hue/Hoi An, for instance. Find good places to stay in each area, and you can explore from there. Decide what makes sense in terms of transport from one place to the other - plane or train.

Do you have a guidebook yet? If not, I'd suggest you get one as soon as possible. WHile we can help answer some questions, this forum cannot be a substitute form a good guidebook.
