Fabric Other than Silk

We are in Bangkok in Feb.(this forum has been a wealth of knowledge) I have heard that as well as Silk in Bangkok there is some great cotton available. Does anyone have any favourite places to go looking for fabric? thanks Marg

We bought fabric at Jim Thompson last year -- some of it silk, some of it cotton, some blend. The main store has a whole floor where you can look at sample books and bolts. Once you make your selection, they have the fabric cut (in a different location) and can deliver it to your hotel some hours later. Be aware that fabric is much heavier than you might imagine -- we had the room to put it in an extra bag that we'd brought along, but ended up shipping it home due to the weight (we feared we'd be charged on every flight for overweight luggage otherwise). Jim Thompson cannot ship it (b/c they have distributors abroad), but our hotel business center helped us. It was easy.

rhkkmk - that is interesting to hear about Jim Thompson shipping fabric. Last December (2004) they told us that they could not ship fabric to countries in which they have a distributor relationship. They offered to deliver to our hotel, but said that we would have to arrange shipping ourselves. Maybe this has changed since last year?

winter---they offered that to us in both june 2004 and 2005....

rhkkmk - very interesting to hear that Jim Thompson offered to ship fabric for you in 2004. Needless to say, this would have made our lives much easier. Good thing that we like our drapes/shades so much anyway! Did you take them up on the offer, and how was the service?

when we saw how tightly they were able to fold the 3 or 4 lengths of upholstery fabric that we had purchased (3 wing chairs worth), my wife said it would fit in the rice bag we had for such purposes, wo we ended up carrying it as one piece of checked luggage...
