eyeglasses in bkk
My wife would like to get a new pair of rx glasses in bkk but i am having trouble finding a place????? We are staying at the marriott resort(thanks again Bob!). Thanks for helping us out!
many, in fact most of the major malls have eye glass shops....from the marriott take the boat to taskim, then take the peninsula boat to their hotel and from there take their boat to river city...on the second floor of river city there is an eye glass place...along sukhumvit i have also seen eye glass places and i think in the emporium shops i have seen them too...

one of the best places in the world to buy glasses is in hong kong
Just buy glasses in the optical store.
Bought sunglasses in Chiang Mai night market, they broke next day. $6 a pair. Wasted $6. You will love Marriott like we did. Enjoy. |
Just as a price guide I use specs for driving and just got new lenses, decent quality that are tinted and then go real dark in the sun, lenses without frames I paid about $65 so I 'guess' that is cheaper than some places but not nearly as 'dirt cheap' as they used to be.
I will give another tip and that is the frames are marked up by hundreds of per cent, a frame priced at B 3,800 ($95) I easily got for well under half that price, they often don't move too much on the lenses but you can knock down the prices for the frames, of course you can get frames real cheap by buying sunglasses and then taking out the lenses but make sure they are of a design that the lenses will come out by unsrewing the frame as many are 'sealed' so the Optician cannot remove them, get a cheap sungalleses frame, take out the lenses and then say you only need the lenses. Language is no barrier as all decent places use fully computerised equipment. |
Agree with JamesA. Always bargain for the frames and I usually get the lenses cheaper than first asked also.
Get glasses made everytime I am in Thailand. They end up about half the price of Australia and thats with graduated bi focals, grad. tint, UV and scratch proof. Have never been unhappy. All the latest French, Italian frames etc. Have had them made at opticians at River City, Times Building ,Indra Regent arcade etc. For me it's where I find the frames I like. |
what is the turnaround time to have prescription glasses made?
kristin--a day or two
thank you bob -- so can we just bring in our current prescription or do they require an exam?
when one goes to have specs made, does one have the rx from your doc? or does one have the eye exam done at the shop?
you can bring your rx or they will know it by examining your glasses in their machine, providing your glasses are the current rx strength...i prefer to bring the rx....i would also prefer to go to an upscale shope like one in a mall....we went to one in the marriott mini mall and the woman who waited on us was so pushy and sales driven that we left and never went back.. be prepared
this is a great thread. never thought of getting glasses in bkk. because of my correction, its very expensive for me to get glasses in us.
bob, i assume this kristin is the name of the shop in the river city mall? |
They test your current lenses and then give you another full test to compare, there is no charge for testing, if sales people are pushy I would leave and go elsewhere.
kristin is one of the fodors posters who uses a different name...
