Extra time in BKK - advice!

We're touring much of Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia over a few months. We originally are spending 6-7 days in BKK at the start of our trip, and then end up back there at the very end for about 3 days. We're now stuck on what we can do for these 3 days, and looking for something close to BKK... were thinking Ko Samet for a beach relaxation getaway. What other options do we have, we don't want to spend too long travelling to get there (2-3 hours preferably). Your recommendations would be great! Thanks.

Personally I'd spent the three days in bangkok and maybe take day trips for one or two of the days.

hua hin is about a 2-2.5 hour drive south of bkk....pataya/jotiem beach are about 2 hours SE of bkk...

Forget Koh Samet, too much traveling for such a short time. I suggest you go down to Pattaya for a night or two. Also consider Bang Saen (between BKK & Pattaya) The Tide Resort is very nice, just make sure you don't go there on a weekend when it's full with Thais from BKK.

I'd go to Kanchanaburi (you can get there by bus) if you are not fixated on a beach break - and if you are interested in history.

Some interesting places to stay on/by the side of the river. WWII museum and cemetery. Trips to see the famous River Kwai bridge/railway - and opportunities to bamboo raft or elephant ride.

And if you didn't do the National Museum in BKK when you first passed thru - then that is definitely worth a whirl.

Pattaya? Why not? If it appeals. I guess it suits some, and not others.

As already said, Pattaya or Jomtien if you want lively, or head south along the coast to Hua Hin area, you can have beach, temples and Elephant rides etc, lots of good on the beach choices, top Hua Hin resorts like the Hyatt Regency, Anantara, Sofitel, Dusit or lots of smaller resorts along the coast, beaches in the town or quieter beaches just outside of the town, Takiab bay, Pak Nam Pran, Pranburi etc
