Everest Base Camp - how long is it REALLY?

I am looking up Everest Base Camp treks at the moment but am quite confused. Some of the tour brochures say it takes 20 days to get to EBC, others say they do a 'day' trip to EBC. In the tours that do a 'day' trip to EBC, would they be driving? (is there a road to EBC?!)

Any clarification would be great!

I can't imagine what they would consider a "day trip" to EBC, as you can't drive there and the trek certainly takes longer than that.

How long is the trek? Thorntree is the best resource for this kind of information.

What they probably mean is that the trek route goes to somewhere that is a day away so on that "day" trip you leave camp hike up to EBC & then hike back to the same camp you left that moring for the night. Ask the companies for detailed trip notes.

Yeah. There's a road to EBC these days. Sorta takes away the romance, doesn't it!

The base camp that is in Tibet is accessible by road, and that road was paved this year for the Olympic torch relay. http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/...erest-Road.php

The Nepal side base camp is apparently not accessible by road.

went to ebc 2 years ago on the tibet side. stayed at the hotel about 3 or 4 miles from base camp. you can also sleep in tents at base camp. i walked to base camp from the hotel and it took about 2 hours maybe. hope this helps....

Oh, yes, I had conveniently forgotten about the Chinese building that road. But as Kim says, there is no road on the Nepal side. It's quite a trek, and 20 days is what people usually allow.

Yes I was assuming we were talking about EBC on the Nepal side too.
