Erwan shrine
 

i have just been told that a mad man spent the nite in the famous erwan shrine (corner of sukhumvit and rajd.) in bkk two nites ago and went wild and broke it all up....smashed the buddah statue and caused great damage...

any on site reports??

i think i have spelled this incorrectly (so what else is new), but you all know where and what i mean...

It was widely reported in SE Asian and Chinese media. The guy was subsequently killed by the angry crowd. Two people were arrested for his death.

I found out what happened from a fellow fodorite who happens to be in bangkok now. I didn't believe this mischievous fodorite but my gal confirmed the news.

hmm a whole gang of thais pilling up on a single person and killing them. is no surprise. that's why I would never mess with a thai person.

The statute was not a Buddha statute but rather a Brahma / Hindu god.

The government will replace the statue and they are having one made now. It will be metallic, instead of plaster like the old one, and the broken pieces of the old statue will be put inside. They say it will be completed in about 2 months time.
