Hi all,

My fiancee and I are planning to have an intimate elopement somewhere in South East Asia. We live in Singapore, I am from UK she is Singaporean. We just want a simple thing somewhere quiet with each other.

Any ideas or experiences which would help us find the place and/or planner?

Thailand and Bali are popular places for weddings, but there are others of course. I can think of many nice places, but just want to say that getting married anywhere will require that you obtain a license in order for the marriage to be valid. In places like Thailand and Indonesia, documents have to be submitted, in the local language, some time before the ceremony. They usually have to be notarized. All this can complicate matters, and may require you to spend a week or more in the country before the ceremony to get all the paperwork done. Take a look at http://www.usembassyjakarta.org/consular/marriage.html for information on foreigners getting married in Indonesia. The site is tailored to a US citizen who is marrying an Indonesian, but the paperwork would presumably apply to two non-Indonesians who wish to be married in Indonesia. The UK Foreign Ministry may also have information on a website. Requirements in Thailand and places like Vietnam would be similar.

As you both live in Singapore, it might be easiest to do the ceremony in Singapore, as you can take care of paperwork easily (and forms in English are acceptable. Your marriage license would also be in English, which might be helpful in the future if you need to provide a marriage license to apply in the UK for citizenship or a visa for your wife). Without knowing whether you want a religious ceremony, it is hard to suggest a venue; there are several pretty churches of various Christian denominations there. You can also get married in one of several parks there
(see http://www.nparks.gov.sg/cms/, click on “Visitors Guide” and then “Weddings@Parks”. ) You can also get married at Burkill Hall in the Botanic Gardens, which would make a nice venue, IMO, see http://www.sbg.org.sg/bukittimahcore/burkillhall.asp Or pick a hotel or restaurant with a terrace or garden and have it there with a meal afterwards. Someplace like the Les Amis au Jardin inside the Botanic Gardens would be very pretty, IMO:

But there are many restaurants and hotels in Singapore which would be a nice setting, you could pick your favourite one. You could also ask a friend with a garden to host the ceremony, or even have it in your own home.

You could also get married in the registry office in Singapore (see http://app.rom.gov.sg/internet/index.asp) and then have a ceremony some where else like Bali as part of a honeymoon. You would not need a license for that, as your marriage would have been legalized in Singapore. But you could have a Hindu or Buddhist "blessing", on the beach or elsewhere, in Thailand or Bali. A local Christian priest may also be willing to perform a ceremony or blessing. Many hotels could help you arrange for this.
