Edo Tokyo Museum

Hi,

Is the Edo Tokyo museum easy to get to from Asakusa area? We are planning on visiting the shrine and shopping arcade in Asakusa first and this museum appears to be in the vicinity but I am not sure if it is walkable or easily reached by cab/subway from there. Please advise.

Thanks

Not walkable (you may be confusing Asakusabashi with Asakusa if you're looking at a map), but just about everything's easy to get to by subway/train in Tokyo. Will you be using a JR pass while in Japan? The museum is easily reached from the Ryogoku station on the JR Sobu line, so depending on where you're traveling from that trip would be covered.

Yes, you would have to take the subway to Ryogoku station and then its only a five minute walk to the Edo Museum. If you are interested in the Edo period you should take in the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Museum with the actual structures recreated in this place outside of Shinjuku....

As cool as the open air museum looks, hawaiiantraveler, I gather that kdd's time in Tokyo is quite limited. And if memory serves he/she is also traveling with at least one young child. The exhibits at the original Edo-Tokyo version, particularly the ones that are a bit like dollhouses (with animation), should be pretty appealing.

Just giving the OP more options if they want it.

Aloha!

And a lovely option it is, even if I still haven't managed to make it out there myself. So much to do in Tokyo...guess I'll just have to go back.

I visited the Edo-Tokyo museum a few weeks ago with an ex-pat friend who lives in Yokohama. Despite having school-age children (Japanese husband) she'd never been to the museum or indeed even heard of it. She was looking forward to bringing her kids back for a visit.

Hi,

Yes, we have only a limited amount of time in Tokyo. We were first considering the Tokyo National Museum but I feel a 6 yr old would find Edo Tokyo more interesting and enjoyable.

How easy is it to hail cabs and communicate to them where you wish to go given the language barrier? Would we find cabs easily near most tourist attractions e.g. Sensoji temple?

Thanks

You'll find cabs pretty easily but you should always have your address written down somewhere - don't expect them to understand you. I would avoid the cabs, they get very expensive and train stations are in easy walking distance wherever you go.
