Easy Rider Redux
 

Tomorrow, Bob and Karen set out on their three week trip driving through the southern East Coast. Bob (Dennis Hopper) and Karen (Peter Fonda) will no doubt meet their equivalent of Jack Nicholson somewhere on their travels. Bon Voyage.

merci.....we look forward to visiting some places always passed by heretofore: charleston, savannah, amelia island, pensacola beach, asheville (biltmore estate), with stops in cape coral (ft myers area--annual visit to a cousin), DC, VA (cousin has not seen or talked to in over 40 years), philly, jersey city (easy stop to get visas for paraguay from consulate in nyc)...

we're taking the convertible hoping for some sun-shine....

also taking the lap top to keep up with fodors and family....

no trip report...

next real trip is march for the LA GTG....

looking forward to travelling with beth again and old what's his name...

Bob and Karen in a convertible? Absolutely. Brad and I rented a Mustang convertible while in HNL for a week for the GTG last September. Bob and Karen joined us for a fun day of driving around Oahu with the top down!

Have a good time, Bob and Karen. You are stopping along the way to see some of my favorite places along the east coast (Charleston and Savannah), plus the Biltmore estate, which I've visited about 5 or 6 times over the years. Are you sure you will have more than a day or two in FLA to enjoy the sun after making all those stops??

I should add that we are leaving for a week in Vegas tomorrow; leaving the lap top at home since it costs an arm and a leg to log on! Will be using computers at Kinkos a couple of times, I suppose, but probably will not post any messages.

greetings from savannah...driving is long, but moves right along...overnites in philly and richmond so far...here now for two nites, then on to amelia island for a couple of nites...

Midnight in the Garden of Karen and Bob?

savannah is a wonderful city....large town really...

there are a series of tree shadded squares in the old part of town...the buildings are fantastic... many different styles...

today we ate at paula deen's restaurant for lunch...it was ok but nothing fantastic....

this afternoon we drove out to the 'beach' over a series of small islands to tybee island...it was quite lovely out there...we had dinner at a real dive called the crab shack and we loved the place....raw oysters, crab legs and local shrimp washed down with wonderful cold beer...we watched the sun go down over the marshes...the best food we have had thus far...

i rate savannah as an 8.5...its a fantastic place for a long weekend...tons of housing in the city and even more within 10 miles...

btw we are trying a marriott, of course, spring hills suites hotel for the first time....WOW, have things improved in the lower end marriott products....our room is a mini suite, with seperate sitting area (love seat sofa-bed, desk, 2 charis, a mini kitchen (microwave, fridge and sink---but no plates, etc)...the bathroom is a toilet and tub/shower with a sink outside the door, so two people can get ready at a time easily....the bedroom is small but that does not matter...bed is good, but not fantastic...large tv swings between the sitting area and the bedroom....very small closet....hot breakfast included..
we are very pleased...price $84.+

a few nites ago we were at a fairfield inn and suites and that was also a whole new concept...very nice too and cheaper...

both had indoor pools

Bob - Glad to hear that you and Karen are having a great time (in your own country for a change1). We still remember our night time tour of Boston in your convertible as a highlight of our visit there.Happy travels.

Bob, I am sure that it's warmer where you are now than here in CT where it's -2F.

Jeane and I did a southern trip a few years ago hitting a lot of the places you are visiting - Richmond, Asheville, Savannah...

I should have told you to give Paula Dean's The Lady & Sons a big miss - we thought it was awful.

Perry Como, Tony Bennett and Andy Williams lead the hit parade. They left their Lawrence Welk box set at home.

I just spent a night in Savannah on the way south, and agree that it's a great destination - I plan to return. I stayed at the Planter's Inn, in the historic section on Reynold's Square, and can highly recommend the Olde Pink House, right next door. After a very good meal we repaired to the tavern in the basement - big fireplace, piano player, quite drinkable port...

the tape we listened to was miss saigon....i'd forgotten how much i liked that music.. so we never get far from asia thoughts...

its chilly here too but we find it envigorating...

craig, we did not find paula deens horrible, it was just not anything special...

the sons were both there as was bubba's son

Bob - our experience at Paula Deens was lousy because not only was the food mediocre but we were forced to stand in line in the summer heat for an hour waiting to get in. Even though we arrived very early for dinner, they could only take so many people up at a time to the dining area on their elevator.

BTW - we thoroughly enjoyed dinner at Bistro Savannah on our second night. Check it out if you get a chance.

Bob, you can get Paraguay visas in D.C. The embassy is there. Or just get one online.
