Driving on Langkawi

Just to confirm - I have heard that I do not need an international driver's license to rent a car on Langkawi. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, with regards to insurance - any advice on whether I would need to purchase? I will pay with a credit card that covers domestic liability but I am not sure about international - anyone with experience?

i don't think when i rented a car there that they even looked at my reg license...

i always charge my cars on Amex and use their provided ins. to cover everything....plus if you have any issues they are super at fixing them afterwards.

you may find on langkawi that they want cash? and that there is a very simple contract if any...

the driving was so easy you can't imagine.... we hardly saw another car, except in the main town...

I rented a car in Langawi several times. As bob says, they rarely check anything and that applies to the major rental companies as well as the local. I tend to stick with Hertz, Budget etc and go with there own insurance, as if there were an accident, it would be easier to sort out (at least in theory!). It is important to check the excess applicable as some can be very high

Your own CC provider may well include cover but you do need to check the excess & conditions etc. I am always a little concerned re the CC insurance as I am never too sure how they would behave in the event of a claim.

Foreign driving license is all that is required - no need for an Int Permit.

Driving is very esy even in Kuah and your own car is by far the best way of seeing the island,

Craig,

They might not ask for a license but do have an international license with you. If you did get into an accident and you don't have a proper license then........

AAA only charges $15 for an international license, but of course it is not translated into malay. so what good is it??

i do carry one now after our thai friends suggested it was inportant...

frankly i think the police prefer real green to a license any day...

I went to AAA yesterday and picked one up - $15 for "peace of mind"...

Very wise Craig! I'm working on my next trip as well and someone on TA advised me to rent my own 4x4 all-terrain vechile and drive off on a safari in the Masai Mara by ourselves(D & I). Well the Mrs shot that idea down like a Patriot on a Scud!

Bob,

"AAA" stands for Alcoholic Anonymous association of America?

also stands for automobile association of America for the kings of the road.
