Dress for Peking Opera

My husband and I will be visiting Beijing the first week in March. We always try to travel light. Our itinerary includes a night at the Peking Opera. Do we need to pack more than dress slacks for this event?

Dress slacks would be fine. It's not a dress-up venue. Remember, Beijing in early March, however, can be quite cold. A warm jacket and sweater would come in handy.

I agree with both points of the above poster - dress slacks will be absolutely fine, and don't forget to bring clothes for cold weather.

Kristi: I agree with the above posters. Dark slacks will be fine. It's not that dressy there. I remember having seen even jeans, etc at the place we went in Beijing. As a tourist, you usually you get to see a very short version (under 2 hours) of a Peking Opera which normally lasts for hours.
There was an English text on a screen explaining what's going on.
We also got tea and some cookies. It wa quite an experience, but I would not go back. Don't expect anything similiar to an Italian Opera. It's quite strange for our ears, but fun.

Thanks for your replys. I figured as much. I always travel with layers.

Hello, We went to the "opera" last June when we were there. Don't expect anything like the opera here. No comparison. You can go rather casual as stated by previous posters. The fun thing is reading the English translation on the screen above. They cannot spell so some of it was quite comical to read. It is okay to see once but I would not go back again.

As the other said it's not a dressy occasion and you only get tea and cookies if you buy tickets for the front area. Last time we went they had a different first part which wasn't very interesting and we saw some people leaving, but hang in there it gets colorful and acrobatic later and the costumes are really nice.
