Do you get tired of giving advice?
I was sitting here looking at my posting on Fodor's - and as always Ia m so thankful for all the excellent comments - and then I thought- don't these people get tired of answering questions all the time?
I admire your patience- I teach learning disabled kids and I GET TIRED of saying the same things :)) I always "try" and contribute my "two cents" when I can.. but it doesn't compare to many of you people who GO THE EXTRA DISTANCE to answer questions ... I live at Tripadvisor and Fodor's. So, in case no one has told you this yet - there is a special "travel heaven" waiting for you after this life . Thanks LDTC2 |
we may be moving in next week....as we say so often we would not do it if we didn't love to do it....plus remember we get tons of info for our travels as well...

I'm not among the "many of you" but the answer is not at all, it's a pleasure to do it and the rewards are enormous as bob mentioned, especially making new friends at GTGs!
With that, I do get a bit tired seeing the same question that has been discussed many times here, the person should really do a Search before posting. Happy Travels! |
Well, fortunately it's not all "give", there's a lot of "take" as well. :)
Over on the US board, the same questions pop up on the Bay Area and Big Sur over and over and over and over again. Yes, I get tired of recommending the same thing over and over and over again. Luckily, there are a number of posters who all share the burden of answering those "same" questions. Here on the Asia board, there aren't too many same questions and the people are among the most sharing of the Fodorites. Thank you for pointing the way to the special travel heaven! Will we have to answer many same questions to gain entrance? :) |
All I hope is that St Peter does not use the same questions that appeared on the 2006 Boston GTG quiz!
|
Sometimes I get tired...depending on the question. But, I hang in here. What really ticks me off though is if I've taken a lot of time to answer a question and then the original poster either doesn't comment, say thank-you, or even acknowledge that I've answered his/her question. Happy Travels!

Karma rules. Those who patiently provide suggestions to newbies are rewarded with esoteric gems. Plus, it's great to see new people captivated by Asia.
We tried to trade Bob, but no takers. We're hoping the Europe Forum is looking for a Needhamite. |
I enjoy sharing my love of SE Asia with others. Yes, occasionally I get irritated with someone who asks a question that has been asked dozens of times before and even appears on the first page of posts! But the rewards far outweigh the irritations.

I'm with Guen - I really appreciate when someone acknowledges that I have taken the time to post an answer. There have been a number of posters over the years that have posted some very interesting questions then disappeared...very frustrating.
While I have visited Bangkok 3 times, I don't always respond to Thailand posts because there are several "pros" that far exceed my knowledge - you know who you are ;) |
I am sure God will let you in without answering travel related questions :) Who knows - maybe he might be one of the posters. and depending on how you answer his question(s) - that will be the test.
I couldn't go on my wacky vacations if it weren't for your comments - and suggestions truly. So thank you from the bottom of my heart- |
lcuy....you didn't even get the two letter sign for hawaii right???
its HI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I am totally in agreement with guen and craig, especially since the threads I reply to seem to be the less popular ones that we have some insight to, like thai boxing or scuba diving. To get no response back is annoying, since I check here 5 or 6 times a day waiting to see if the OP responded!
I do really like the attitude on this board. Unless it is a troll, everyone here gets treated with respect, even if their question has been asked a million times before. Bangkok hotel anyone? The other board I am on, flyertalk, while very helpful is also mean. You better of done your homework there before you ask your question, or someone will flame you and ask if the search button is broken!?!? It would be very nice to have a "sticky" here that we could all contribute to, and answer some of the most popular questions. |
I have yet to get tired of answering, although I agree that I wish people would take more time to search first, as the same questions do often come up (e.g.: "Kowloon side or Hong Kong side?"). I am however, shocked by the number of people who seem to buy airplane tickets to a place and then ask "What are the 'must sees'?" in a manner which makes me think that they know nothing about the destination, which of course begs the question as to WHY they are choosing to go there in the first place.
I also learn a lot from this site for my own travels (info for my first trip to Hawaii was very helpful in October) so feel that advice I give is well reciprocated. What I find tiresome actually are people who post advice which is not complete, mostly restaurant or shopping reccos with no name or address or vague directions like: "it's near the Oriental Hotel on a side street, you can't miss it". Well you certainly can when there are like 5 "side streets" near the Oriental...or "we loved this restaurant in Naples near the ferry, sorry can't remember the name.." well, why post that then? In 30 years of traveling, including some very obscure places where they barely speak English, I have yet to find a place of business that does not have a business card. (Roving food carts possibly excepted, but that's about it.) If you find a good place, ask for a card so you will remember to give others a chance to experience it too! |
To every single one of you - THANK YOU - this SE Asia trip we are STILL on would not be possible without your input. We are truly grateful and yes I think in our wn way we all do give back or pay it forward - I answer quite a lot of questions re Cape Town and South Africa and the trip report - I see now on 70 "postings" - is also my way of giving something back. So to all you guys, Cicerone, Kathy, Bob, Panda, James et al - we are grateful
|
I would like to echo capetownfolk and say THANK YOU!
I would also like to commend the posters on this board for being such a welcoming, supportive environment... unlike certain other fodors boards. We leave in less than 8 weeks, and I can't begin to tell you how much help you have been, even from my first post where I explained how hesitant we were to travel to Asia for the first time. I am so excited! Liz |
I am an avid Fodor's reader and occasional poster (if I feel I have somehting to add). I have to agree that this particular forum is fabulous and I have definitely appreciated everyone's advice and input. I had read all of the books, but there are so many things that you can't get from the books.
I LOVE reading people's trip reports - so to all of you out there who are wondering if anyone gets anything out of those lengthy reports, the answer is a resounding YES!!!! Even if I don't necessarily respond to the report, I love reading them and some I print out to add to my growing folder for the trip. I hope that I always say thank you when I post a question and people respond. If I forgot at some point - a belated thanks. I always check back to see if someone has answered my query. So, keep answering those questions all of you experts. People are always amazed with the trips I am able to put together and I always tell them that I couldn't do it without Fodor's. |
I have to agree that this forum is invaluable and one of the most friendly that I've participated in-love flyertalk also but watch out! Thanks to all for so much helpful and enthusiastic advice.
|
I want to add my heart felt thank you to all the regulars who help us newbies with our redundant travel questions. You are appreciated!!
(even if you didn't warn me about extra shipping costs when sending marble home from Vietnam) |
LOL, Cicerone. I guess I am one of those shocking travelers. I did almost zero research and on the spur of the moment grabbed FF tix to BKK for the heck of it. I am now reading Thailand/Cambodia threads aplenty to try to figure out what to do when I get there :)

I find that participating in this forum keeps my memories fresh. Through reading reports and answering questions, I am transported back to the delights of Asia. This is enhanced by the cordial nature of almost all posts. Information flows easily.
I remember being a newbie and learning. In fact, even though our first trip was arranged through a US travel agent, we changed BKK hotels after reading a post. That was what lead us to the WONDERFUL Royal Orchid Sheraton. My memory is that the poster was named Margo. |
