no. i dont think so. i was just there for 13 days and only needed my passport

You don't need a visa if you're planning to stay less than 90 days. As long as you have a valid US passport and a return ticket, you will be fine.

If you are a civilian visiting and staying in Japan 30 days, you don't need a visa. If you're a civil servant (working for U.S. Government, having the Red passsport) going to Japan, you will need a Visa if it's work related. I'm not sure about being a tourist though as a civil servant
