Discount Airfares & Taxis on the Move
A couple of items from today's Thai newspapers:
Bangkok Airways is discounting airfares as much as 40% during the low season. Samui will be under 2,500 Baht and Siem Reap around 3,000. Lasts until June. At the new Bangkok Airport, they're planning to move the regular taxi queue up to the second level (arrivals), where now the limos have exclusive access. The Airport authority has ended it's joint venture with the limo operator, so they're now trying to make a level playing field. It's supposed to happen after Songkran, but the story was in the Post, so it might not be accurate. |
I have heard rumours that Thai have announced that all passengers arriving in Bangkok will have to clear Customs and Immigration there, before flying on to their final destination. If this is correct, transfer times will increase considerably and the check in queues will be even longer and more disorganized.
Fortunately, we can fly direct to both Singapore and Hong Kong from Chiang Mai, hence avoiding the shambles in Bangkok. |
I would hardly call it a shambles.
Clearing customs in Bangkok is only necessary for those that have to transfer back to the old airport, which isn't necessary for Chiang Mai, Phuket and most other major destinations. There have already been suggestions that it's costing Thai too much money to operate out of both airports. They may well move all flights back to the new airport after the new year rush. |
