Dim Sum in Australia

Does Dim Sum go by another name in Australia? here in the US it refers to the Chinese food that is provided in restaurants by servers wheeling around carts with various delicacies on each cart. When you choose one, the server marks off a paper that is kept at your table.

When we were in Sysdney some years back we had Dim Sum and they called it Yum Cha I believe. They did not roll the carts around like they do here in the US- you ordered off the menu. It was very good.

'Yum cha' is Cantonese for 'drink tea', and used by Cantonese speakers the world over to indicate going out for dim sum, much as 'afternoon tea' is a meal in English--not just tea but tea and sandwiches, cake, scones, etc.

Thanks. We just had wonderful Tum Cha at the China Pearl in downtown Boston. The streets were clear of traffic until we got to Chinatown where there was bumpre to bumper traffic. The restaurant was full.

For our Xmass lunch we went to Banana Leaf - a Malaysian restaurant and it was great!

We call it both Dim Sum and Yum Cha - but unfortunately there is also a take away version of a fried dumpling sold in fish and chip shops called a Dim Sim so I think Yum Cha is being used more these days!!!! Fish shops do Dim Sims and Chico Rolls - both to be avoided if possible - although of course many people out there love them. Not panda food for sure.

The bigger restaurants use the trolleys but smaller you order off the menu. The egg tarts to finish are one of my favourites.
