Delhi Restaurant Recommendations
 

We'll be spending two days in Delhi at the end of February, staying at Delhi Bed & Breakfast. Any recommendations for memorable (for the right reasons) Indian restaurants please? 4 years ago we enjoyed The Banana Leaf in Connaught Square for lunch, but I don't remember anywhere else, foodwise. Bukhara looks overpriced & undervalue. Would much rather have great appetising local food than over top 'ambience' & nondescript food. Some reviews tell me the actual B & B we're staying at cook up a storm, but it would be nice to hit the town in the evening.

Bars too, while we're on the subject?

we found bukhara to be way overpriced for what it is....the other indian sheratons have the same menu for far less...

the imperial is a real experience for dining...

I liked Bukhara but was taken as a guest and can see how it may be high for a meal. Food was great. My colleagues went to a plave called Veda on Connought place that was meant to be good. A fashion designer owns it and it was tricky to find but they enjoyed this.

Imperial hotel is also good for food and if you get tired of Indian there is a decent Italian in the Hyatt.

On the cheaper side i am a big fan of Cafe Turtle above the full circle book shop in the Khan Market http://www.atfullcircle.com/cafe_turtle/index.asp ask anyoine in the shopping place here and they can direct you. Its cafe style and very tasty. I love the felafal and Ice tea here.

There is also the Market Cafe in the Khan Market and Amici Cafe.

Oh omne things I love about India is the Chinese food. Its fantastic and slightly spciy but i have had some great Chinese meals as most upmarket hotels ghave a chinese restaurant.

Do try home cooked food at the Delhi B&B. There is nothing like homestyle food i feel.

we had a good lunch at basil and thyme at santucci shopping center, which in itself is a very worthwhile stop....its at a military base in delhi...

Punjabi by Nature for great north indian food at good prices - don't miss the raan (leg of lamb) - look up their website for location nearest you. Sravana Bhavan near Connaught PLace for South Indian or then Sagar Ratna. Swagat in Defence Colony market for coastal Indian cuisine esp seafood.

Thanks for the advice. Bukhara & Veda do look a bit up their own fundaments from the websites & reviews; Cafe Turtle, Choke Bizarre, Basil & Thyme, Punjabi by Nature & Swagat all look worth a further look. Talking of food, I saw that Virgin airline complaint reported on a post here recently, now that really was lol - bittersweet 'cos that's the very flight we return from Mumbai on 22 March. I will report. T minus 12 & counting, dogdude.It's getting exciting, so not much sleep actually, or is it just karma for all that stuff...

We'll be arriving in Delhi Friday morning 27 February, Amritsar by train the next day, fly back to ND Sunday afternoon (I admit that's a bit hectic) then off to the Dooars (as we call those hills in the Himalayas) via Kurseong on 2 March. Sadly, the Darjeeling Times online notes that the steam toy train isn't running due to the ongoing political stuggle, but the good news is that the 'hunger strike' has been called off - that's due to a thaw in relations between the GJM (Gorkha Independence Party) & the West Bengal state government, so maybe we'll be able to get around OK, especially to home sweet home at Yangsum Farm in Sikkim. How long are you hanging in Kolkatta - meet us for a drink at Cochrane Place on Monday night jet set lad! I seem to remember you've got some fantastic festivals lined up from Bengal to Rajahstan, then something about a cut price cruise from Singapore to Athens - looking forward to the stream of consciousness on that lot. Go guy.

Belated Happy Valentines Day to all in India, having seen some weird reports on my rolling India news station about right wingers in Karnataka beating up foolish amorous couples (two of whom were actually a brother & sister walking home after school) for celebrating V Day; of all the things to get het up about...ooh, there's the Hindu girl who committed suicide in Mangalore because of threats by guys (always us guys ain't it) after she talked to a Muslim man - who have the police arrested, the gang? No, the young man of course. Ah well, there's certainly cases of worse persecution around the globe, people just make asses of themselves wherever they are.

hey leon: well off into the deep before you - just. We miss each other everywhere we go. I'm getting excited again. Mostly at the prospect of all that Indian food. just bring me thali till I die. That's the main reason I'm staying 6 days in Kolkata - to eat my way thru at least 8 of the best restaurants there. I'm outta there on Feb 28.

Make sure you get and read the local papers while you're there. Amazing. Local T.V. is quite a treat, as well. Never a dull moment.

You sound in robust form. You gonna snuck us notes from on the road?

We returned from India three weeks ago and we were in delhi on the last leg of our journey. We had dinner at Bukhara, no reservation, food was great and the service excellent. One reason could have been that they were not busy. We also had lunch at Khan's near Jama Masjid, excellent food but spicy.

You should also try Indian chaat. Go to someplace hygenic like Haldirams, they have some really good chaat.

Check out burrp.com for reviews on restaurants in major Indian cities. Very useful.

you can also try the somewhat more generic Punjabi By Nature for North Indian fare. Bukhara i have found to be limited, Dum Pukth is a much better option within the same chain.
