Day trip to Nanjing from Shanghai possible?

Hello! We will be in Shanghai for 3-4 nights at the end of the month and was wondering if it's possible to do a day trip to Nanjing from Shanghai if we leave in the mornign and come back in the evening? Thanks!

Shanghai to Nanjing by train is 309km. Fastest trains take 2:50 with one-stop at Suzhou. Other fast trains about 3:20.

I can't find any non-stop flights for this route, for some reason. I guess Chinese aren't used to fly for 200-mile trip yet.

So, it's at least 6 hours on the train. I don't think it's a good idea for a daytrip.

Thanks for your response rkkwan! I agree if it's that long, it's not worth a day trip. =P Thanks!

I'd definitely agree that it is too far for a single day trip. The trains in china are very good, but you don't want to spend that long on one, and try to see as much of Nanjing as possible also. It's quite a spread out city.
If you want a daytrip from Shanghai, you could try Suzhou?
