Cyn's a little concerned about Laos

Is anyone there now, or just returned? US gov has posted a public announcement regarding movement of Laos troops on route 13 to Luang Prabang. Any info greatly appreciated!

How do they know this? Spy satellite? If there was any inkling of trouble Australia would have banned us from travelling already to cover their backsides after Bali. There is nothing on the DFAT site yet.

Hi Cyn:
My husband and I were just in Luang Prabang last week. No signs of any problems. Lots of tourists, the hotels and guest houses, restaurants and tours all seemed to be very busy and all the locals looked happy enough and not in the least stressed or nervous.
If you have never been you will love it. We certainly did!

if you re-read that report, you will see it does not say troops are moving "to luang prabang" but rather that they are near "vang vieng," quite a ways from luang prabang.

they are discouraging road travel on route 13 which has been the policy forever. in fact, most road travel discouraged in laos.

therefore, you have nothing to worry about! luang prabang is amazing!

kingbonza - yes, I have checked the Australian site - I actually signed up for their email notices too, and you're right - it is reassuring that they have not published any warnings.

Thanks keldar - it's always good to get first hand info!

kerikeri - yes, I know it says on route 13 between Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang - I just don't know how close where we are going to is to these areas.

I do feel better - thanks!
