Curfew in BKK

The latest reports from BKK (6AM Thai time) are a curfew is in effect in BKK. Today all banks, schools, gov' offices will be closed. Probably not wise for any tourists in BKK to move around too much until the situation unfolds more during the course of the day.

in a day or so things should be calm...in fact they seem calm now...just like the last time this happened

When was the last time this happened?

I didn't think there were anti-western interests in Thailand. What about Cambodia? I was planning to spend most of my time in Siam Reap anyways.

If I remember correctly, the last coup was in 1997. The history of these coups is that they tend to be over quickly and without violence. Note that in no way is this coup anti-western. The Thais have been trying to remove this Prime Minister for some time.

Well the media is totally hyping up that the general is Muslim. So what?? Man now I see why people hate the media.

My itinerary was the fly from Bangkok to Siam Reap and then fly from Siam Reap to Phuket (via bangkok) and then spend 5 nights in Bangkok. If things get hairy, I'll probably just eat the rest of the domestic flights and spend the rest of the tiam in Cambodia - Phnom Penh. I just spend $300 on internal flights within bangkok. Anywyas it's hard for me to do this but I will have to do a watch and wait type thing....

Last Coup was around 1991, General Suchinda took over and the anti coup protest led by Chamlong was bloody. Ended up with the King ordering both side to stop.

Hanuman, tell us your take on it from the ground in Thailand.

Hanuman Sep 19th, 2006 05:40 PM

Kathie,

The news in Thailand is strictly censored right now with no foreign news being broadcasted. Internet speed have also slow to a crawl.

Latest is that the coup leader will make an announcement at 9.00am local time. All I'm hearing are rumors from friends and relative and they are quite wildly speculative from pro Taksin forces massing at a certain location in Bangkok to Taksin have already agreed to terms with the coup leaders and was moderated by a Privy council.
