Credit cards and cash machines

Just wondering if credit cards are taken at most restaurants.

We are, of course, planning on using cash for small, out of the way places, and the local markets - they won't take cards, same as at home.

When we travel, we get cash from the bank machines when we run low, as we usually get a better rate than buying the currency from the bank before we leave home (Canada).

Most top restaurants will take them and larger shops when they want the sale, smaller places won't, they loose between 2.5 and 4% to the credit card company, that might not sound a huge amount but it's off their bottom line, I would always either make sure they take cards or have sufficient in cash in case, there are ATMs everywhere.

small shops and some small restaurants only take cash but most restaurants of any size and almost all hotels take credit cards....atms are found all around bkk and in many parts of CM as well...

the best way to get local cash is to use an atm card...

Can't comment on Chang Mai, but BKK probably won't be a problem using credit cards. But...this may not be the case with your credit card, but see if they charge a foreign transaction fee. Many banks will charge up to 3% of each purchase every time you use it. If you have a debit card, they may not charge that extra fee. Just getting cash from an ATM and using it instead of the credit card may save you some money.
