Cooking Classes in Shanghai?
 

Hello!

I will be in china (Shanghai) the week of may 25th, 2004 and am extremely interested in finding chinese cooking classes taught in english. I've been unable to find anything on the web.

I've been to shanghai a number of times, but have never been successful in finding a cooking class or school. Any assistance is much appreciated!

My mom is very interested in the same thing and has been bugging me to find her one for her visits for the 5 years we've been living here!

I just double checked the local expat magazine (there haven't been any regular courses in the past), and found this listing, a language and culture school that says the offer cooking classes:

The 4/5-star hotels sometimes offer cooking classes, which run for a half day, and cover all types of cuisine (in different classes), from desserts to pastries and occasionally dim sum, Thai, etc. (point being that it's relatively rarely "just" Chinese food). I know for sure the Portman Ritz Carleton offers these classes occasionally.

Another option would be a private lesson, which would probably be the most interesting option. You could post an online classified at www.thatsshanghai.com to see if you can find an interested teacher.

Do post back with what you find out (and your experience if you do a class) - my mom will be back in August!

I asked my friend here in Shanghai who has done some cooking classes. I'm pretty sure she said the Portman Ritz has stopped their classes. She knows of a Chinese woman who does classes in her house but you would need at least four for her to do it. ummm, and the reason for wanting to learn cooking in Shanghai is?

Shanghai dishes consists of a lot of "red roasting" and plenty of salt, just as Northern China/Korean food is known for its dumplings and garlic.

You might want to find out exactly what kind of "Chinese" cooking the class will be teaching.
