Connecting time train to plane?

We are going to overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok arriving at 6AM. Is there time to get to the airport at Bangkok for a flight to Phuket leaving at 7:40am or should we plan on the 10:50am flight? Best way to get to the airport from the train station?
Thanks

Taxi will be your quickest way from the train station to the airport. You have to check in an hour before your flight. I'd say the chances you could make a 7:40 flight are slim. I'd book the later flight.

i too would book the later flight....there is a train station directly in front of the airport....perhaps the train stops there before arriving in bkk???

unless you are saving tons of money, why not change your plans and fly from CM to bkk as the fares are so cheap now...??

isn't there a direct flight from CM to phuket a couple of times per week??? jamesA????

Thai airways have a morning fight every day direct to Phuket costing around 4640 baht. You save a fair bit by using the budget Air Asia airline flying to Bangkok early morning and connecting to the morning flight to Phuket - costing about 2460 including all taxes/sevice fees. If you take the train you will save around 450 baht (based on 2nd class a/c lower berth. The train will stop at the airport station (Don Muang) at 5.26 which in theory would give you enought time to catch the 7.40 flight. But thailand trains are often late by hours so to be on the safe side the later flight is your best bet.

The overnight trains do stop at the Airport, probably about 45 minutes before they arrive in Bangkok. You should check that out on the Thai State Railway Site, http://www.railway.co.th/httpEng/

You would certainly have time to make your flight. However, the link to the terminal building is not a particularly easy one and you would then have to get from the International Terminal to the Domestic Terminal ? you could walk along the air-conditioned bridge or take a shuttle bus. If you have a lot of luggage, it could be a problem.
