As you can tell from most of the above, nobody flies United anymore, it's horrible: the planes are too full!
You could get the Economy Plus Access for $299 and get E+ for both of you for a year. If you are a United Mileage Plus member then you will earn just over 15000 miles which is enough for a free short-haul domestic round-trip.

mrwunrl, be careful not to discourage too many from flying ua, or you may not get upgraded to bc becaue of a full cattle car load.
i have been checking asia flts from hi, and they are very expensive. its like $1400 for an upgradeable fare from hi to bkk. this year doesn't look like a good year for us hi travelers to asia. no more $615 fare during april to bkk.
btw, papa joe playing south florida giving 22-24. what do you think? trying to make money for my outing at the bamboo bar at the oriental, not the one at soi 4 or 5.

Full of what?
I guess you mean nobody HERE flies UA anymore. Hehhe... Well, for some people UA does make sense. They have 4 non-stop flights daily from US to China. They have 3+ daily flights from US to Hong Kong. They have the only US-operated flight to Vietnam. Sometimes you can't avoid them...

I'm another loyal UA customer who flies more than 50k per year, so I get those upgrades on most flights. My Sept ticket ORD to BKK cost me just over $1300 to be upgraded. I, like others, use my miles for upgrades, not for free tickets. I'm tall and do not sleep well in economy.

But not for long because I will be moving to California and LGB would be the most convenient airport, but AA flies only to Dallas from there. SNA might be an option, but probably will use LAX. Is LAX a hub for any airline? Seems like everybody and their brother uses LAX and no one dominates. I guess it serves as a place for US carriers to connect to their foreign partners?
Carol, with your status your E+ seat might be in an exit row if you went coach. And you could hope for an operational upgrade. I use my miles for free tickets instead of upgrades.

No one airline dominates in LAX, and no hub there. And one major problem with LAX is the horrible facilites at the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT). Even top-rated airlines like Cathay Pacific have horrible service at LAX. Many people in metro LA would rather fly from their favorite airport to connect in SFO, SEA, or occasionally PDX, for flights to Asia.
I haven't used LAX for a long long time, but last time was coming in from HKG, and I had to accompany a non-US citizen. Stood over an hour in the "alien" line, and that's a normal pre-9/11 day. There's also no rail connection between the terminals like SFO, DFW or almost every large gateway airport in the country.

We flew Chicago - Toyko and Osaka - Chicago coach and it was fine. You get on, have a meal, watch a movie, take a Ambien and wake up in Asia. We thought it was going to be much worse than it was. United was fine. Check out www.seatguru.com to see which seats are best for your type of aircraft and airline. Some seats are much better than others. You'll make it. No worries. But don't leave home without the Ambien it helped a ton to sleep when you wanted/needed to sleep.

moving to ca? hope its a move necessitated by a promotion, and bigger bucks. congrats. you are going to miss all the great ua deals out of iad, but at least you won't have to shovel snow.

I'll use my miles to upgrade anytime on those long flights. I like my usual seat "upstairs" on the 747. I know how much space I have, where the bathroom is, etc. without having to stop and think before packing for the trip.
My miles accrue pretty fast, what with all the traveling I do, plus using my UA credit card, and my status with UA gives me double miles for each trip. I even had enough extra miles to give my brother-in-law and his wife upgraded seats on their recent trip to HNL. They don't fly that much, so the first class experience was fantastic for them and I was happy to do it.

Thanks for the information. We are going to Japan by the way. I discovered that I had enough miles on United to purchase one business class seat. ( I haven't flown United in several years and didn't realize the miles didn't expire.) I found a great travel agent that specializes in travel to Asia and booked a fare for my husband in business with a certificate that the agent had giving him a free upgrade. We have to take separate flights home and my return is a bit off ( have to fly Osaka to Chicago then back to Seattle) but at least it was free for me. So I shall begin reading all the messages to begin my planning for our trip in March.

perkinsclan, with a MileagePlus business class award I would try to fly on a United partner like ANA or Singapore Airlines. Like BillT mentioned, the FAs on ANA seem to provide good service, a pleasant manner, effortlessly. United FAs can be grouchy and I can think of at least one rude one. The upgrade for your husband is a great deal, so that is a good reason to use UA outbound. Since you are flying separately on the way back you might try flying on ANA to SFO and then United up to SEA.

I'm no fan of United's seating. Never have been. Will pretty much always take the alternative when available.
BillT, based on some comments here, including yours, we decided to give Eva's premium coach a try on the next flight. Appreciate you talking about it here. Seems a good value for the little difference in cost vs the length of the flights. Out of curiosity, how was the inflight entertainment options compared to some of the others? I've read mixed reviews, not that it's a major issue or anything.

The United mileage is good. The tickets price is a little more expensive than asians. Asian flight comfort has an edge over United in term of seat arrangements.
The food is catered to americans, not bad at all. United airplanes are aged. August flights are mostly sold out. September may be different when kids have to return to school. There will be plenty of empty seats on airplanes.

I just came home from S.E. Asia and on the way there I was on United in economy and it was very comfortable. I was in United economy plus, but have also been in regular United economy and it's a lot more comfortable than Thai Air economy which is very cramped. I just came home, day before yesterday, in Thai Air econonmy. Happy Travels!
