Clay cooking pot in Hong Kong
 

Does anyone know where can I find a clay pot for cooking rice in Hong Kong?

Everyone is using automatice rice cooker these days. I don't vene know if there are still any of the old style "harware" stores in Hong Kong where they sell all kinds of glazed and unglazed clay pots.

Please don't ask me to "look around": I am in Hong Kong visiting but can't seem to be able to find one. What area or store shall I go to? Thanks

- Check out the Yue Hwa department store, selling all sorts of Chinese goods. There are branches all over the city, with the best selection at the big store at Jordan MTR station.

- Go to Hollywood Rd near the Man Mo temple, and look for pedestrian streets leading down from Hollywood Road. I've seen several of these that are lined with hard goods shops.

Yue Hwa has it, but on the expensive side. Locals don't buy it from Yue Hwa. You can check with Japan Home, a chain stores selling kitchen/household ware all over Hong Kong. See the address of the shops:

Yue Hwa is more a destination for high-end Chinese handicrafts and stuff like that.

Clay pot cooking is still very common in Hong Kong especially in winter. We have a delicacy called "small pot rice" which comes with various choices of meat like beef, chicken, minced pork, salted fish, frog, etc. Even in summer, some small Chinese restaurants which you could find easily in every street still offer this food, and they cook it on the gas stove right in front of the shops! Interesting enough that some even offer "take-away" option as well which I suppose you could pay for the clay pot as well if you pleased.

If you would like to buy a new one, look for the little shops in every wet market which sell sundry household goods such as plasticware. Some large supermarkets (what we called "superstore" here) also sell it as well.
