Clarification please - room types for Japan hotels
 

I'm feeling a little stupid right now but stupid is as stupid does so I thought I better ask.

I am having trouble understanding the room choices. What is the difference between a "semi-double," a "double" and a "twin?"

I made one reservation with an agent. The room came back as a "twin." When I asked her if the bed was big enough for two people she changed the reservation to a double. There was a language barrier and I am still not sure we understood each other. I am trying to make other reservations on my own and I would like some idea of what I am getting.

A twin room is 2 twin beds, each big enough for 1 person. A semi-double is one bed that is a little wider than a twin bed and is big enough for one person. A double bed is a double bed...not queen, not king, but double, big enough for 2 people who don't mind being close. Only good hotels offer beds bigger than double. Semi-double beds are sometimes used in twin rooms in good hotels, but otherwise are in upper priced single rooms in business hotels. You may find that twin beds are more comfortable than a double if you are used to sleeping in a queen or king.

Thank you! It sounds like I need to order a double if I want to sleep with my husband (in the same bed)! I am specifically looking at APA Chuo in Kanazawa. Their double is listed at 13,000 and the deluxe twin is 22,000.

And you are right, I did not have this confusion when reserving through Hilton websites.

I also look at the size of the rooms. 22 sq meters is about as small as I like to go. We are more comfortable with 28 m or larger

In 14 to 18 meter sq rooms you are literally falling over yourselves

APA Chuo's twin is 16 m2 and ¥10,800. Double is 13 m2 and ¥9,100. They have a bigger twin room at 20 m2 for |14,000. There are other prices for some inclusions like breakfast/spa/massage....none of these are offered in English via their English website nor by telephone, only online booking in Japanese.

The hotel is nice enough, used by lots of Japanese tour groups. Seattle's best Coffee in the lobby with a mediocre breakfast buffet offering. Location is great right in Katamachi, and the rooftop bath is very nice as well. Room size though, they are very small, and the double room will be like a closet. Get a twin, or choose the Tokyu.
