clarification needed-atms in Siem Reap
I haven't paid much attention to this yet but just got my "warning" from the State Dept. about Cambodia after I registered for upcoming trip. They said that you can't use an ATM in Cambodia without having a local bank account. Is this true? I planned on bringing some small US dollars but assumed I could use an ATM in Siem Reap while I was there. Clarification anyone? Thanks (ps, I will only be in Siem Reap, no other location in Cambodia)

fodorites reported using atms in SR for about the last year

Absolutely false. There are at least 5 atms i saw in Siem Reap. It dispensed dollars flawlessly. I had less trouble there then I did in Buenos Aires.

Thanks, but this doesn't answer my question- am I supposed to have an account set up at a local (assume this means Siem Reap) bank in order to use the ATM?

A local account is not necessary. The State Dept.'s information is out of date.

Thanks Kim!

One more verification. We used ATMs in February in Siem Reap - no problem at all (and our only bank accounts are in the US).

Super, thanks again!

Hello,
Anyone with a Canadian bank account have success using the ATMs in Siem Reap? If so, which bank are you with? Thanks! |
We too have been giving the same advice as the State Dept. on our website and until fairly recently it was correct but KimJapan is absolutely right---this info is out of date.
However, one little rider, Not all machines will accept all cards, so 1.Try to take more than one card. 2.If you have no luck at one machine, try another, you will probably find one that is OK. |
