Cicerone - HK Tailor
Hi Cicerone,
My husband will be in HK next week and wants to have a suit and sports jacket made (good quality - high end). He's staying at the Intercontinental and won't have much free time, so somewhere near there would be great. Tried Maxwell, who you've recommended previously, but URL doesn't work. Any other suggestions? |
I typed in "Cicerone Tailor" into the Fodor's search and two threads came up with info from her about Maxwells and two other tailors in HK.
|
Thanks, Jaya. I did the same search, but only found women's tailors. I also want to make sure I find something that is near the Intercontinental.

Below is a cut and paste from the thread I found from 2006. I don't know HK so I don't know where these are located. Maybe the phone numbers are still good if the web isn't. Jaya.
Maxwell's Clothiers Ltd. 7A Han Hing Mansion 38-40 Hankow Road Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon website: maxwellsclothiers.com e-mail: [email protected] tel 852-2366-6705 fax: 852-2366-6658 Maxwell's is located in the Nathan Road area of Kowloon, where you will find a ton of tailors. There is a map on their website showing their location. They have an astonishing selection of fabrics. They will keep you measurements and you can order from them on-line in the future. You should make an appointment with them in order to get full service. William Cheng & Son 8/F, 38 Hankow Road Kowloon, Hong Kong Tel: 852 2739 7888 This is a tailor which a friend of mine has stared using, he used to go to Maxwell’s and felt Maxwell’s was getting too expensive. I have seen the suits he made, and think they are very good, and my friend is pretty choosy as well and he is very happy as well. These tailors about at least a third cheaper than Maxwell’s. They are also in the TST area near the Penn. You should make an appointment. |
I am not Cicerone, but I'd guess that I have worn many more men's suits than Cicerone. I've tried a few HK tailors, and the best I've tried, bu far, is WW Chan, on Nathan Rd in TST. They are very definitely high-end: exceptional materials, excellent tailoring, and (unfortunately) relatively high prices. They're on the 2nd floor of the Burlington Arcade (same building as Sam the Tailor and Ash Samtani), about a 5- or 10-minute walk from the InterContinental.

Rizzuto,
Can you indicate a general price range for a nice two-piece men's suit there? My husband may be spending some time in HK... I am wondering if this would be a good idea but I have absolutely no sense of current HK prices for high-end tailors. A very general sense would be helpful. Thanks. |
Mary Alice, I haven't bought a suit from Chan in 3 years, so prices have surely gone up. Then, it was around US$1100 for their standard wool fabrics, which are very, very good. They need lots of material to make a suit for me, so it's possible that a smaller guy would have paid less (but probably not a whole lot less).
Also, Chan does make a couple of visits each year to the US, which makes it convenient to order add'l stuff. Web site is www.wwchan.com. |
Thanks, and I see that they are coming to Boston next July.

Thanks, everyone.
