Christmas Time in India

Hi all,

I will be in north India during Christmas time this year. (New Delhi, Rajestan, Varanasi).

Are there any Christmas highlights you would recomend? Christmas markets etc? I think it would be interesting to experience some Christmas events in India.

Thank you!

If you want to experience Christmas in India you should visit either Goa, or Kerala, or both. There you will find plenty of Christians.

I'm not going there for Christmas specifically, just thought I'd try to make the most of it while I'm there.

India is predominantly Hindu. In most areas, you will see little sign of Christmas. There are certainly not Christmas markets, though you may find some things in shops and stalls that would make good Christmas Tree ornaments.

As Thursdays says, if you want to see Christmas celebrated in India, go to an area that has lots of Christians, like Kerala or Goa.

As Kathie says, India is a predominantly Hindu country, and the largest minority is Muslim (third largest Muslim population in the world.). Christians make up 2.3% of the population. Please explain why you would expect Christmas celebrations in Rajasthan and Varanasi.

"Please explain why you would expect Christmas celebrations in Rajasthan and Varanasi."

LOL seriously? If it makes you feel better to have a condescending attitude, then please keep going. Thanks for quoting statistics that I am already aware of, being of Indian decent myself. Glad my post could help you stroke your ego.

Because I'm sure there isn't ONE Christmas tree in all of India.

If you're of Indian descent, and aware of the statistics, how come you need to ask about Christmas "events" and "markets" on a travel forum, frequented very largely by non-Indians? Of course there are Christmas decorations in some places in India, but that wasn't what you were asking. I spent Christmas for years ago in the capital of Kerala, and aside from a Christmas mass or two, and some blue and silver stars and balloons in my hotel, you'd hardly have known what season it was. Good luck in Varanasi.

A simple "There are none" would have done without the ego stroking statistics

Agree. Why are you jumping down the OP's throat, thursdaysd? Seemed like an innocent question to me...and certainly no mention of expectation of anything. Have a Coke and a smile.

Given the ignorance displayed by your question it appeared that the statistics might actually be educational. If you already knew that there were virtually no Christians outside Goa and Kerala, why expect Christmas markets in Varanasi?
