Chinese equivalent to B & B?
Our favorite type of accommodations in North America is the Bed & Breakfast. Small, clean, friendly, good atmosphere, delicious meals.
Can we find such accommodations (or closest available) in China? Your recommendations would be great for Beijing, Xi'an, Yangshuo. Thx. |
You won't find many. I think the risk is too high for the owner of such accommodation in a country like China. Guests not paying, emptying out the place, if not robbing the owner outright.

Gosh.... you're not painting a great picture of travellers in China...
|
Have you seen Chinese travelers - in the US, Europe or elsewhere? They are far from pretty.
Most accommodations require a cash deposit for the customers if they don't have a credit card, and then when you check out of a hotel, they will send someone up to the room to see if everything's still there. Like every single towel or lightbulbs. I am not kidding you. In a country like this, just ask how can a B&B owner protect himself? With most travelers domestic Chinese, it's hard if not illegal to limit your customers to foreigners only. |
rkkwan is right, there are not many B&B-style accomodations in China. The concept of boutique hotels has not yet taken off in China, and if you're a Chinese traveler and wealthy enough to stay in a nice place you want the glitz, glamour and prestige of an overseas brandname. You will find guesthouses, however, and some are simple, clean, charming and less expensive than 4 or 5 star properties. In Beijing, the Lusongyuan is one such hotel; it's housed in a grand courtyard home that dates back 500 years.

Keep in mind most chinese in larger cities live in crowded highrise apartments. In addition to the risk, the B & B concept is still foreign so the demand is low. The courtyard home style ones in Beijing that petitepois mentioned are probably run like hotels, not similar to the cozy American ones you enjoyed.
