Chinatown for 3 night stay?

We'll be spending the first three nights of our honeymoon in Singapore in September. We need to decide on what part of town to stay in and which hotel. I hear about Orchard Road a lot, and shopping sounds fun, but it's not the #1 thing we're into.

I think we will:
see Night Safari and Zoo
shop
sample strange foods
tour some of the temples/historial areas
perhaps Orchid Garden

We will also likely be looking for things to do at night.

I like the idea of staying in Chinatown, only if it's accessible to everything else. The Scarlet looks to be a nice hotel, but so new I haven't heard many reviews.

Does anyone have feedback about our activities or The Scarlet?

The Scarlet has a great website. I, too, would like to hear some reviews.

For me the most important feature of a hotel's location is that it's no more than 5 minutes from an MRT stop. I often stay near the intersection of Scotts Road and Orchard Road at teh Grand Hyatt or in the Raffles City complex. I like both of those locations.

There are some reviews of the Scarlet Hotel on tripadvisor.com. One issue seems to be that some of the rooms don't have windows so it's important to specify what you want. Otherwise people seem to like it.

The Scarlet DOES have a good website, and the tripadvisor reviews were good. Phew.

Now, to back up, do you guys think that Chinatown is a good base for what we want to do? Is there a city in the US I can compare Singapore to in size to get a mental picture? I live in Chicago, so I'm used to a big city.

I also live in Chicago and you'll have no problem in Singapore. It's not a chaotic asian city. It's very modern, very clean and very regulated. You'll have absolutely no problem

Singapore will be greener, warmer, cleaner, safer, and higher-tech than Chicago. You'll have no difficulty navigating Singapore.

Thank you so much for your help. Sounds like Chinatown may be perfect, then!

I can't wait!!!!

You'll dig the subway stations! They have actual couches in some!

Couches in the subway?! What a far cry from the bird poop on the CTA stations here.

Sounds like I'll love it.

Anyone else have tips or "must see's" for me?
