How much should I expect to pay for a visa to Beijing, China ? Thank you for any information

I suspect that depends on your nationality. Have you tried a google search to get to the relevant authoritative source?

Assuming that by "American" you mean that you are from the USA (which, of course, is only one of MANY countries in the Americas! ;-) ), this should be the link you need:

Normally American citizen pays $140 fee for 10 year tourist visa if you apply at a Chinese consular office and pick your passport up. So if you do not live in or near a city where a consular office is, you have to pay a local travel agency for their fee additionally.

China, along with few other countries, seems like charging a lot for a visa, but the visa fees are usually reciprocal; in other words, Chinese nationals need to pay that much to get American visa.
