China / Thailand - August Trip!
Hey Fodor's folks!
I'm traveling to China and Thailand this August and wanted to share my itinerary now that it's finalized. Any suggestions would be fantastic. I have only five days to enjoy Thailand, so if anyone can recommend the absolute must-see's, must-visit, or must-eat's, please let me know.
August 18th: LAX to PEK
August 19th - 22: Beijing
I'll be visiting college friends teaching English during this time. I've been to China twice now, but both times in Winter. It should be interesting to be there in summer. I'll have to prep for the heat.
August 23th: Arrival in Bangkok
August 24th: Bangkok
August 25th: Phuket
August 26th: Phuket, travel to ?
August 27th: ?
August 28th: Flight back to Beijing
August 29th: Flight back to the states
I can already taste the Jao Tze.
Cheers and thanks for the help!

You only have 5 days in Thailand, don't spend it all traveling. CHoosing two places (Bangkok and a beach) is really the maximum you should try
From your current itinerary, it looks like you want some time at the beach. Note that August is monsoon season in Phuket. That means that prices will be low, but you are likely to see a lot of rain. Consider whethr you must visit Phuket or if you'd prefer to visit a less rainy beach in August.
There ia lots to do in Bangkok. At the very least, visit the Grand Palace/Emerald Buddha compex and Wat Po. Ride the water taxi from the skytrain stop to get there.

Interesting in summer????
In Beijing,in August, you will find pollution like you never saw in your worst nightmare.
Arrive in Phuket on 25th.....travel to somewhere on 26th....leave on 28th........
In the words of a Wimbledon great......YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!
Kathie, you are a saint!

Geez, thanks for the comments there Johnny Mack.
Kathie -
Thanks so much for the reply!
I will make sure to steer clear of Phuket and just focus on two days in Bangkok and two days in a beachy / coastal area. Any recommendations for a good coastal area in north-east / central Thailand? It's going to be myself (25) and a college friend (also 25) - water sports, nightlife, but on somewhat of a budget as well.
Thanks again for the help!
Best,
JW

Well, traditionally at that time of the year people recommend Koh Samui. But in your time frame you'll have to fly there and the flights are expensive as Bangkok Air owns the airport. Another option would be to go to the Hua Hin area. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from Bangkok. You can take a luxury bus or a taxi. It has very low rainfall in August.
Take a look at other posts about Hua Hin. JamesA often has great suggestions for budget places at the beach. Take a look at a Thai booking company www.sawasdee.com is one I often use. Do note that they will check availabiltiy for you without a credit card number, but they will ask for a one night deposit when you book, and the rest of the cost about two weeks ahead of time. The advantage is that their prices are good (and typically include tax and service which total 18% plus breakfast as well) and they are very reliable.
