Any recommendations for hotels in Beijing (4 nights), Guilin (2 nights) and Shanghai (2 nights)? Looking to spend an average of $150/night.

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Beijing for around $140 not including taxes and loved it! Great location for everything. I called their 800 number and negotiated a rate that was less expensive than the on-line rate. The Sheraton in Guilin was OK for $140 not including taxes-good location on the river however, it was full of tour groups. In the bar they were playing Karen Carpenter music. Yuk. We stayed there one night and moved on to Yangshuo.

Guilin Waterfall Hotel, Guilin Sheraton hotel are best hotels in Guilin with good location near Li River, Parks, Center and lakes.

In Beijing, I really love to stay in Swissotel, it is great location, Just 10 minutes drive to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. I got 108 USD , you might find it from here :

I stayed at Wangfujing Grand Hotel (Beijing), which was billed as a 5* hotel. Unfortunately, the ranking was chinese, not international. The double room was tiny, the furniture was ancient and rickety. Due to the liberal smoking policy, everything smelt of old cigarettes. Oh, and chinese mattreses tend to be a lot firmer.

I ended up at the Grand Hyatt and it was great ($140,non-tax). My friend swears that she saw me hugging the walls and stroking the TV unit, but I think she's lying.

Anyway, the point is, stay in a western hotel!

In Beijing, I second the suggestions for either the Grand Hyatt of Swissotel. You can usually get a better deal on the swissotel, but the Hyatt is in a slightly more convenient location.

In Shanghai, the Westin is a good choice - within walking distance of the Bund.

Can't help you with Guilin hotels. But unless you have a reason to be in Guilin, you should travel two hours south to Yangshuo for a more immersive experience in the karst landscape.

In Beijing, the Taiwan Hotel, 1 block off Wangfujing next to the Novotel) runs $70-90 for a double, depending when you go (October will be at the high end). It is a solid 3 star with clean rooms, everything you need unless you want a mega lobby with glitz. Like a good Holiday Inn. T Square and Forbidden City about a half mile walk. Hope Mao's ear is still on.

close to Taiwan Hotel,there is anotehr new hotel called Regent Hotel,it was open this year,it is also under 150$ in Wangfujing area.

I am pulling up rates of 1750 RMB at the new Regent Beijing for November....more than 200 USD. As Violet says, it is diagonally across the street from the Peninsula, about a block further east.

Moniquesd, at what time of the yaer did you stay at the Grand Hyatt? $14o a night is a great rate. We are planning to go in September.

I LOVED the Westin in Beijing. It's really new, the rooms are great, service great. Only thing is that it's a bit far from central things - but we actually didn't mind that b/c cabs are super cheap and it was kinda nice to get away from the craziness of the busy areas. So if location is super imp to you, dont stay here but we found the location totally ok b/c the most expensive cab was still probably 10 dollars at MOST.

Rueben- We stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Beijing the first week in June. I booked the room in mid-May.

For total luxury, you can't beat the Peninsula in Beijing. They happened to have a winter stay package that came with the most unbelievable breakfast, for a very reasonable price.

Funny story, true.


We stayed in a hostel for $7 US/day for two days. Beds were extremely comfy.

Switched to tour hotel (Capitol Hotel) Don't know price, as tour included hotel, but very hard beds.

Interesting, I say.

roslaire: Hard beds are the norm, when they get soft and old they are sent to the hostels.

Did you see pillows made of wood or porcelain in the Palace Museum? Now those are not the norm, I don't think I can sleep on them for more than a minute!

We really liked the Ramada Plaza in Shanghai. The location on the pedestrian shopping street was great, and the service was gracious and the concierge was extremely helpful. The room was very comfortable and cost about $130. And two coffee bars are very close by.
