China: Beijing and Hong Kong best Restaurants
 
Can anyone offer some favorite best restaurants for these two cities? Especially: the best place for Peking duck?

Roast duck:

Da Dong Kaoya Dian Beijing

Not only the best source of Beijing’s most famous dish (roast duck) but a vast menu of new Chinese invention all prettily presented in a nouvelle cuisine manner (but with decent portions), in a luxurious modern Chinese setting. There’s a long-established branch at Tuanjie Hu, but the new location is brighter and better. The duck here is prepared by a low-fat method of the owner’s creation, but that’s far from the whole story. Not only is every other part of the duck offered in a dozen different ways, but Da Dong has also produced more than 100 new dishes all described in a big picture menu. 11am-11pm, Dong Si Shi Tiao 22 next to the Imperial Granary buildings (subway Dong Si Shi Tiao), tel 5169 0328.

For the Peking Duck, you can go to the Qianmen Peking Duck Restaurant.
And in Shanghai, you can have a good dinner in Wangbaohe Restaurant. Any other questions? You can send me an email and I will try my best to give you more information.

wendyqiuwen, giving a different email address here, but nevertheless still a Chinese travel agent touting for business.

Only tour groups go to Quanjude (which probably pays kick-backs to agents), which now has dozens of branches across Beijing and is just about to do, or has just done, an IPO. In general the restaurants with long histories are the ones that haven't caught up with modern times in terms of service, and the branch mentioned has just had its front smashed off and rebuilt further back due to the widening of the road outside. Whichever branch you choose, its duck is ho-hum.
