Chilling (or not) on Langkawi
 

We are not much for sitting still (laying on the beach) while traveling. We decided to include Langkawi on this trip because (1) it fit into our itinerary easier than some other destinations and (2) it seemed like a pretty cool place, especially if we stayed at the Bon Ton Resort. We have an afternoon, two full days and another morning to fill with activities. The current plan is to rent a car on arrival and use it for the afternoon and the next day to explore the island. On the second full day, we thought a kayaking (or boating) eco-tour of the mangroves and associated wildlife would be worthwhile. I really have nothing for the final morning but maybe that's not so bad. I considered a sunset dinner cruise but we can watch the sunset from our resort and the kayaking should cover the nature aspect of the cruise so don't want the duplication or expense. The Bon-ton and it's sister resort seem to have pretty good restaurants for dinner and we are considering taking a taxi to a nearby contemporary Malay restaurant that has been rated #1 on TA. Any thoughts?

What ever you do Craig don't waste your time going to Kuah the main town..... (or the awful oriental village)
I think what you have sounds fine and the little,town (can't remember it's name) is a few minutes away by car. The staff at Bon ton used to drop us in.... Anyway the restaurant at Bon Ton is FANTASTIC....
I wish we had done a Mangrove tour when we were there so will be very interested in your take on it.

sounds perfect....not much other to do on island, and i agree the town is terrible

I agree with smeagol's comments re Kuah town but there are some great little local malay & chinese restaurants there. The eco tour of the mangroves is well worthwhile as is an island hopping trip (langkawi is alledgedly comprised of 99 separate islands). The lake of the pregnant maiden is included on many of these trip.

For high end dining you could try the Thai restaurant at The Datai - some of the best thai food to be had anywhere and a great location set stils on a platform out into the rainforest canopy (not cheap though!)

I really enjoyed the mangrove tour, but not much else.

Scenery on the island is gorgeous, but very little to do by way of activities, unless you count the dreaded Kuah.

BTW when you get to Bon Ton I seem to remember they have a restaurant list, which if I remember is very good. ( bit like the one I sent you that they gave me for Penang) There are some great photo opportunities for Jeane on the Island but we didn't find there was loads to do but to be honest we needed a break when we got there so just pottering around suited us.

We enjoyed our mangrove tour but didn't do much else b/c stayed at the Datai and just relaxed there. The restaurants there were all excellent although the Thai one was our least favorite. Dinner at the resort is definitely worth a trip, whichever one you select. We had our lunches at the beachfront restaurant, lovely view and service.
