Chicken flu in Thailand??

Should we be nervous about the reports of chicken flu in Thailand, Asia? We escaped completely unharmed from the SARS epidemic last year after touring through HK, VN, BKK and Singapore!! Of course, I didn't dare cough!! Seriously, is this something to be concerned about? TX

Someone topped the previous message about avian flu for you. The situation has not changed. All known cases of avian flu in SE Asia have been transmitted via contact with chicken, duck or geese manure. There has been no person to person transmission. It cannot be transmitted via eating poultry or eggs. There is no reason at this point to defer travel to SE Asia. You can keep current with info on the avian flu at either www.cdc.gov/travel or at www.who.org

Negative Bob - he is strictly a carnivore!! Thank you Kathie - our papers showed that a couple of people had been infected and they suspect that it is transferable from birds to people.. are warning the workers disposing of the infected ones to be v. careful. Have to feel sorry for Asia - finally came through SARS and now have this to "worry" about.

Bob: remember the old saying - never see sausage being made or laws enacted!! We haven't heard from James??

Eating chicken from what I understand is OKAY. It is fondling a chicken that is dangerous.

Skaye Jan 26th, 2004 09:03 PM

Kathie: You are definitely correct. No one has said it is communicable from human to human. They are just "scaring" a lot of us with that future possibility. As I said, after going through the whole SARS thing (and having had a flu shot!) we are not going to cancel. Citiboy - I would NEVER play with chickens!!

If the situation remains the same as in the last three weeks, most of the restaurants aren't serving chicken meat. However, all of them served chicken eggs. Go figure.

A tourist told me that she saw a truck in Chiang Mai giving out free chicken to everyone. The government sponsored it with the hope of getting the locals to start eating chicken again.
