Chiang Mai--Taxi from airport to hotel

What is the taxi situation at the Chiang Mai airport? Is it easy to get a taxi at the airport into town?

Someone posted that a taxi at the airport was as like hen teeth. Do I need to schedule a service ahead of time? If so, where do I get the name(s) and contact information?

Thanks--Susan

I have read reports that say it is very easy and others that say it is absolutely impossible. I guess it is hit or miss, then. Just to be on the safe side, we have decided to arrange for a private car.

Some of the confusion is probably due to the fact that you can't just walk out of the terminal building and hail a cab, as you can in most other airports. Chiang Mai airport has a dedicated taxi service, which is very cheap (75 Baht last I remember) to most city hotels. There's a counter right outside baggage claim where you request a taxi. I have never had to wait for a taxi, and I've been to Chiang Mai more than 20 times in the last few years.

When I arrived in Chiang Mai on 12/23, early in the early evening, the woman at the taxi stand informed me "there are no taxis available." Meaning they were all in use (or at home) and unlikely to be returning soon.

But several private drivers approached me - cost was 100 baht. I doubt they were insured however.

Next time I would arrange something beforehand.

If you are not staying at a hotel that has their own transportation to and from the airport, how do I make arrangements to be picked up at the airport? Thanks--Susan
