Chiang Mai Tailors

My fiance and I are headed to Thailand for our honeymoon in November. He is really interested in getting a suit while we are there. We'll be staying a week in and around Chiang Mai, so we'd like to get it done there. He's really wants QUALITY suit making, so we are looking for referrals and suggestions. Have any? Thanks!

I have travelled to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai - the shopping is great for many things, but I have never heard of this area as having an expertise in tailoring. Hong Kong and Singapore would be your best bet for tailoring (if you are heading in those directions) but even those locations are not what they used to be. Good luck!

Bangkok certainly has excellent tailors. Sorry, I don't know of any in Chaing Mai, but there must be some.

We just got back from Thailand on our honeymoon. Phuket, Bangkok and Chaing Mai. My husband had 2 suits made in Chaing Mai. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent Quality. We went to Universal Tailors I will give you exact info if you want. He was thrilled. It took 3 days and he had 4 fittings.
If you want morer specifics email me at [email protected]
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

Oh God, I'm having flashbacks! ar ar When we were there a few years ago, there were a zillion tailors. We went to Hong Kong tailors (although they were really from Nepal, I think) and while I have to give them credit for producing good suits, they were a huge pain to deal with. Maybe all the tailors are a pain? My best advice is to go to your chosen tailor right when you get to town, because it may take longer than you think. Either know your fabrics or take samples to compare to. I chose a fabric for my suit and one time they said it was one thing, the next time they said it was something else, and so on. If possible, take pictures along with you of what you want or know EXACTLY what you want. And be prepared for a heavy sell (would you like another shirt? an extra pair of pants? how about a dress?). We found the quality of the suits to be pretty good but everything else we got (shirts, shorts, etc) wasn't so great.

One other thing. The default for women's clothes seemed to be an Asian cut, in other words cut for a short slim Asian woman. If this is not you, be sure to tell them if you want your clothes looser than skin tight.

Just returned from the 1st trip yesterday. I suggest you go to Raja behind the JW Marriott.I went in and bought 4 Brioni-Armani quality suits. Also, 8 custom shirts, 2 pants and four ties. You need 3 fittings. He will deliver the package to your hotel. I paid $1,000 and am extremely pleased. Ask for Bobby or his dad Raja. While you wait, they serve cocktails and beer.

Dear beezootoo,

I've been in Chiang Mai last year November. I've purchased a suit at Universal Tailor. It's beside the Empress Hotel.

You can believe me, they deliver Quality with capital "Q". Ready within 1 day.
The suit I purchased there is that good that I've ordered another one already over there and they will sent it to your home adress.

Have a nice honeymoon ;-)
