Chiang Mai Recommendations?
 

Ok, so I know most of you recommend Tamarind Village as THE place to stay in Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, it's booked for when we'll be there (in about a month) for our honeymoon. What are the next best places to stay? I stayed at the River View Lodge last October and liked it, but we're interested in other options. I understand the Sheraton is out of the way, and I'm concerned that the Imperial Mae Ping and Chiang Mai Plaza don't have much character and are packed with tour groups. Tamarind's sister hotel, Rachamankha, is more than double the cost - is it worth it? Any advice?

Chiang Mai Plaza is an excellent hotel with lots of character. It is located centrally in the heart of the night market, yet it is hidden enought that you will not hear the hustle and bustle of the market as the way the hotel is located, it is closed away from the night market. Talk of ambience and character, the hotel have been renovated by the renowned designer who designed the Regent Hotels like the one on Chiang Mai. Tamarind Village and Mai Ping and even the Sheraton is of no comparison. Of course if you chose to stay at the old wing, compared to the new wing, then you get what you paid for. I recommend highly the Chiang Mai Plaza.

Are you saying that there is a new wing in the Chiang Mai Plaza? I'm about to reserve a room there and want to make sure I book the right thing.

Take a look at ban-sabai spa - www.ban-sabai.com. I haven't stayed there but considered it once when I was not getting Tamarind Village. Looks charming. Have u tried tamarind Village thru www.precisionreservations.com - I got it at short notice thru them.

Yes, the old wing is cheaper than the new wing. The name of the proprieter is Mayuree Suriyapong. Mention my name. Next to the hotel as you stand in front facing the road on the left hand sside is an indian restaurant. Prices is excellent around $5.00 for a decent meal - vegetarian is also availabel
