randig Nov 24th, 2004 07:57 PM

just came back from a real adventure in northern Thailand that started in
Chaing Rai and ended up in Chaing Saen.
There were 4 adults and we cycled and motorcycled through the mountains with
smiling albino adventures. My 19 year son was extremely jealous that he was not with us. It depends on the age of your family. Because these are private tours, they can be adapted to your needs. It was a great way to see the country side. I was told that Chaing Mai is quite large and after being in Bangkok we wanted to experience the countryside.

Hi Sharon,
Your trip seems amazing, can you send me a copy as well? [email protected]

We were planning on going to LP after Chiang Rai but it looks like there aren't any flights from there? How far is the drive from Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai?

sharon815 Dec 2nd, 2004 06:18 AM

Sorry for the delay. I've e-mailed the info to everyone who requested it in the last few days.
Sandra, the drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai wasn't overly long (several hours) and there are some nice places to stop along the way. It was a pleasant ride. The one I wouldn't recommend is the drive to Mae Hong Son - definitely fly!! That one's torturous.
If I can help with anything else, please let me know. Also, I'd love to hear any final trips plans you've all made:-)!

An alternative suggestion. In January we rented a car and drove the "Mae Hong Sorn Loop" starting and finishing in Chiang Mai. This took a week :

Mai Sariang - at town near the Myanmar border - 1 night at the Riverside resort a nice hotel & very quiet town.

Mae Hong Sorn - 3 nts Fern Resort - superb hotel with villas set in lovely gardens/ paddy fields. They have a team of guide dogs who will take you on guided walks in the mountains. Mae Hong Son is now quite a busy town so it was nice that the hotel is about 3 miles out of town.

Pai - 2 nights @ Belle Villa Resort - another amazing hotel with villas surrounding the paddy field. A very laid back town which I preferred to MHS. Lots of good restaurants. Intersting drives out to the surrounding counrtyside visting villages, hot springs etc.

The round trip was probably around 3/400 miles through spectacular mountain scenery. The driving was not to onerous as long as you can adapt to the Thai style of driving. One word of warning - there are lots of steep hills and hairpin bends. I have been to Northern Thailand a number of times and this was the best trip yet!

Sharon, is it still possible to say "me, too, I'd love to see your itinerary, etc." [email protected] thanks Jan

althom1122 Feb 27th, 2005 08:04 AM

ENOUGH ALREADY!!! Please post the blasted itinerary. That's what these boards are for. Threads that devolve into hundreds of requests for an email are ridiculous - and insulting to the rest of us who are reading because we're interested in the INFORMATION, not because we're interested in a thread of hundreds of individuals asking for hundreds of individual emails. GRRRR... this is my number one pet peeve of these boards. Post the information - don't post an offer to send a bunch of individual emails!

glorialf Feb 27th, 2005 08:20 AM

Crellston-- I also did that route. Started in Mae Sot, followed your route and then went to Doi Mae Salong, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Nan and Phayo. We did it over a 3-week period and it was one time when I really felt like I got to know a lot about the Thai culture and way of life since we saw few tourists in many of the places. Highly recommend it for people who are returning to Thailand or who have a lot of time or who are really interested in the people, the ehnic minorities and refugees rather than temples and shopping, and spas.
