Chiang Mai Hotels

As a follow up to a message I just posted (for Ko Samui hotels) we will also be staying in the Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai area from May 10-15 so if you could help us nail down where to stay in CM as well it would be a big help.

We have narrowed down the choices to the following:
-Yaang Come Village
-Tamarind Village
-D2 Hotel Chiang Mai
-Baan Orapin

Again, we are interested in staying somewhere to get a local flavour and prefer a location that is convenient to things (markets, town, etc.). We are looking to spend in the $60-100 USD/night range and are open to alternative hotels.

Thanks again!

My husband and I and my two adult daughters stayed in Yaang Come village for 4 nights earlier this month. The location is terrific....just 1/2 block from the night market and near a 7/11 etc for snacks. The rooms are lovely and very spacious. There is a buffet breakfast every morning with western and thai food available...it was very good.

The front desk staff helped us several times with hiring a driver and also arranging a Khantoke dinner at the Chiang Mai cultural center at the last minute.

I highly recommend the Yaang Come....for the price, I think it's a real deal!

Enjoy your trip!

Margy

While Tamarind Village is quite nice on the outside, and has a really interesting location, the rooms were a bit too plain for my taste. Not my idea of a honeymoon place.

Baan Orapin is a bit better on most counts, but many rooms lack the privacy you might want.

There are many reviews on here for Yaang Come Village and Baan Orapin - do a search and you should find them. On the basis of these, we have chosen to stay 3 days at Baan Orapin and 3 days at Yaang Come but I am afraid I cannot comment on these as we haven't stayed there yet :)

Bella, after you come back would you mind giving some feedback on both places as we are going in July and tossing up between these two. Thanks.

Hello - unfortunately we are not going until July also! We are at BO 26 to 28 and YC 29 to 31 but will certain post back to compare after that. I think there has been another thread recently comparing the too - I think Kippy may have stayed at both and Gloria had stayed at BO but been to see YC.

Ah! Peterlan I've just seen that was your thread so I guess you have read the comments already :)

Tourist perspective. The Royal Princess CM would be a 2 1/2 star accomodation in the US.

I'd stay there again 'cause I liked it, but even the "Deluxe" rooms (>6the floor)were pretty basic by US standards.

Baan Orapin is much better than Royal Princess in my estimation and Yaang Come is deluxe compared to Royal Princess. I found RP to be dreary and, most important, dirty.

We stayed at the Baan Orapin last March and was very happy with it. Definately would stay again. At the time it had recently opened and so their was a bit of building fences and such still going on, so it may have even improved since our stay. The couple who run it were very nice and very helpful. I ecspecially liked the location.

Close enough to the city center and markets but still far enough away to get away from it. Also there are several restaurants and bars near by along the river.

Yes that's right Bella and as Gloria and Kippy say we need to decide which of the two sorts of accommodation would we personally prefer ( at this stage I am tending towards the more personal style of Baan Orapin ). Does anyone know the email address of Baan ?

The website for baan orapin has their contact information: www.baanorapin.com
