Chiang Mai Day Market

Does anyone know what time the (Sunday) Day Market in Chiang Mai begins?

We're arriving via night train from Bangkok and get in rather early (6:50 AM)...was hoping to visit the market but also have no idea what time it starts.

We arrived at noon and our driver/guide Poon recommended to start at 4-5PM and after 3 hours you will have enough and a nice dinner at the Whole earth or others would be a nice day. If you are staying at a middle or upper range hotel you can request an early check-in. There is no guarantee but usually you can be in your room by 10-10:30 AM if you give a $10 gratuity. That way you can rest, have a light lunch at 2-2:20 and off to the marketby 3:30.

If you want to start sight seeing straight off the train, consider visiting the flower market which is spectacular in the early morning. You’ll find it on the west bank of the Ping, just north of the Nawarat Bridge, which is on the road from the railway station.

There is a left luggage facility at the station.

I should clarify--we are staying outside of Chiang Mai, so we're arranging for a pickup from downtown Chiang Mai at around 3 PM that day to our hotel.

Thanks for your advice, Tangata...I was thinking of leaving our bags at the train station and heading out into the city, but worried about the time. If you say that 7 AM isn't too early to start seeing things, then I feel much better.

Still trying to get an idea of when the day market opens, though, as it has been so highly recommended.

They will sell you things as soon as they are set up, and we saw people setting up before 10:00...not many, but some. It really doesn't get going until an hour or so before dusk though...we went around 5:00 and it was calm and quiet with some open spaces for more sellers. By 7:00 or 8:00 PM the place was packed and vibrant...humming with activity. Music, mini parades, performers, every space occupied by someone selling something or other. I'd definitely go again, but I'd not go until after dark. It was much more interesting then than earlier in the day.

I am talking about the Sunday Walking Street, where the streets are closed to traffic and it's only on Monday. The Night Market, every night, isn't nearly as interesting.
