cheap travel in southeast asia
There's a group of us that need to get from Chiang Mai (Thailand) to Kun ming (China)
and also from Chiang Mai to Rangoon (Myanmar). What's the best way to do these routes? Is there bus routes/trains/any sort of bus pass?

You may want to buy yourself several of the Lonely Planet guides. Also explore the Lonely Planet website and it's travel board called the Thorn Tree.
Briefly, there are no cross-border trains or buses in this area. Both Burma (Myanmar) and China require visas in advance. You can go to Burma on a day trip to the border town without a visa in advance, but that doesn't get you where you are going). You will have to fly to Rangoon.

You can travel from Yunnan in SW Chiina by road all the way into Lashio which is the Burmese sideof the border from China.
The routing will be Kunming/Dali/Mangshi/Ruili. Ruili is the Chinese side of the border. From her you walk across to Laashio the Burmese side of the border. From here you can make you way down to Bagan and fly to Chiang Mai or Mandalay.

This route is called the Old Burma Road or the Zigg Zagg Road by the way, made famous by General Stillwell and his infamous solders during the Japanese invasion of the Pacific in Burma
