Plenty of choice but you can get good and bad ( or very good and very bad ) for same price! There is a very fine line between Guesthouse and hotel, many guesthouses are just small hotels ( it's a license thing really ). What is your budget? You can get a guesthouse for B 500 or for a few hundred more get a nice good small hotel.
As far as beach is concerned yo can fly to the island in 1 hour, very approx US$130-170 return ( Samui by far the most expensive route, Phuket cheapest air route ) or you can go by bus for about 750-800 baht. If you want a place close then Pattaya for very lively, Jomtien Beach just past Pattaya for quieter but still stuff to do, south to Hua Hin ( very quite ). depends what you are looking for to decide which beach is best. Koh Chang takes about 5 hours ( south east from Bangkok ).
Tell us what type of beach you want and your hotel budget, I am sure many can give you tips/advice. To get you going find guesthouse and cheap hotel rates for Bangkok and check the reviews, there are many sites this one has cheap accommodation:, over 100 places in Bangkok from $8 and upwards.

Ok it's good you have a budget, AUD 100 is about B 2,500.
1> Don't change any cash until you get to BKK.
2> Your 2 biggest costs will be accommodation and transport, often the other way around! e.g Bus BKK to Krabi/Phuket will cost about B 750 each ( 1,500 for 2 ) but a decent a/con clean room might costs 600-800 for both, so do watch tranport costs.
3> Probably 'Woodlands' will fit the bill for BKK accommodation, cheap but bookable hence they are answerable to the service that books you. Decent reputation. has links for cheap accommodation plus reviews, they have places from B 500 and upwards.
4> Krabi area will probably be idea, lots of beaches, islands, but sufficient restaurants and places for a few beers. Lots of eco trips and plenty to see on your own. Railey Beach and Phulay beach are great, you have not said which time of year you are traveling?? Remember Nov-Feb is really peak time so you should book quick. Around the Krabi and Koh Lanta areas nice beaches and cheap accommodation.

The old Atlanta Hotel is quite popular with rooms at B350 to B500 a double. They have a good restaurant and a pool.

They will be listed in the guidebooks, but they don't have email booking.

You could also consider the Malaysia Hotel in a similar price category, also with pool.

Both are in the Sukhumvit area, the Atlanta at Soi 2 and the Atlanta at Soi 13.
