Cheap flights to KTM (Nepal)

Any tips on getting cheap tickets from NYC to Nepal? Cheapest I've found is about $1400 w/Thai Airlines.

Also, are there cities outside of Nepal that are close by? I have a lot of freq flier miles, but it's been difficult getting all the way to KTM. I think I will have much better luck using freq flier miles to a nearby city and then purchasing another ticket into KTM, or getting there by land. However, I don't know what cities are best to connect through.

There are not that many International carriers that fly into kathmandu Nepal, since the region has been somewhat volatile over the years. Most biG International carriers had suspended service,so you will not have that many choices. Thai is one of the best ways to get to KTM these days, and that fare sounds pretty good to me, though the routing is a bit long-winded! But on the plus side, Thai-Airways is suberb and now has a direct flight NYC-Bangkok 6 days a week! Perhaps take the stop-over in Bangkok too! Other ideas, yes! You you can fly to KTM VIA an Indian city, ppreferably Delhi with the best connections and most service of this route! So you can fly New DelHI, INDIA, and then book one of the regional-local airlines round-trip to KATHMANDU. this is a rough estimate, but the price Delhi-ktm-delhi would probably hover around $250 plus, depending on the carrier. i forget exactly, but i can surely find out for you as i am usually in Delhi and fly this route all the time!. U can also fly to Calcutta, India and on to KTM or if you are really adventrous u can fly to Dhacca, Bangladesh and on to KTM! So, those are some ideas! good luck!

As Bonita said not so easy, but the Thai non stop to BKK and then connection to KTM is about the easiest way. Delhi is the other option, Jet Airways has a new daily DEL-KTM flight, but I agree 1,400 for a return on that route is not bad, Thai use either a 777 or A-330 from BKK so it's good flights all the way, a stopover or connection in BKK is also pleasant.

i just requested a routing from a bkk travel agent and he quoted me $785....that is bkk-del-kat-bkk so you price is cheap in comparison...

Bangkok is generally the cheapest gateway to Asia. When I went to Katmandu, I flew into Bangkok, took Thai Air to KTM, then flew on SIngapore Air from KTM to SIngapore. I purchased an open-jaw ticket from Seattle to Bangkok and Singapore back to Seattle and purchased the KTM portion of my ticket separately.

tjhsu- if you are looking to use FF miles, JFK - Delhi might be the way to go. And then purchase an add on Del-Ktm ticket yourself, which are fairly cheap. American recently started flying direct to Delhi (from JFK or Chicago can't remember??)

yes; AA flies non-stop Chicago-Delhi. I spoke with them last night. cost is $1025 or 80,000 FF miles.planes are 777s and not at all booked now. Have 2 different itineraries in mind for May with 22 year old daughter as grad. present: one to Delhi, Varnarsi and then not sure as I think Rajasthan will be too hat. Ley sounds like it has gone down hill since I was there 20 years ago and Srinigar, as well. So, it being beastly hot in May and I am not getting any younger, a few days in Delhi (and Agra) then to KTM.lowest airfare from DEL-KTM-DEL on kayak.com was $230. Suggestions and feedback, please. thank you Jan
